Can Catholics be Democrats?

It is not.
And if you don’t vet, all you do is bring the same persecution with you, I assure you the alternative is not a majority Christian and other minorities immigration, since the Democrats have already called that Islamophobic.

And it was the Republicans who rightly proposed that and it was the Democrats who shot it down claiming it showed favoritism and bias.

They are being deported back to Mosul, Iraq—a war zone! :no_good_woman:t2: Catholics! Our brethren!

But sure, wave the pro-life flag but let’s just send them back to their certain death, because we don’t want to also help some Muslims escape a war zone.

There is no “Catholic” candidate. You probably can’t then take communion if you have voted someone in who supports the death penalty.

Has anyone voted someone in who has keeping the death penalty on their agenda? If so, please leave the communion line.

Have a hardline stance, but then have it all the way. Pro life means no executions, no abortions, not allowing anyone to be persecuted and killed for their faith (regardless of their faith), increase in mental health services (a lot of people commit suicide), etc.

I have seen no evidence of this happening for one, and a thread came up about it before and I said it would be wrong and that I would be against it.

“There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia,” Pope Benedict XVI

The Church basically teaches that we can only kill in self defense, today when we can lock criminals up, it is an extremely difficult case to make that someone in handcuffs and safety detained can be executed, which is why I am also against the Death Penalty, fortunately here in Australia we do not have it and I will not and have never voted ‘for’ it.

I am also against Torture, and would love nothing more than for Trump to change his stance on those things. If a better candidate runs against him in 2020, they will have my support, but certainly not if they promote abortion, euthanasia and same sex marriage.

The Democrat party, much like the Australian Labor party today, used to be Catholic, but they are certainly not Catholic parties today
Uhm no…the Democratic Party was never ‘Catholic’. No, not even close.

You seem to have an interest in US politics. But I think some of your assessments are a little off.

I think JFK and RFK were good men, I haven’t read much to the contrary, did they support abortion, euthanasia etc?

God Bless You

If there are any democratic Catholics on here, can you explain how you justify your position?
I have voted Democrat in the past for reasons as you outlined, but last time around I got disgusted with the Democratic Party’s embrace of all things gay and partial-birth abortion. Plus I didn’t trust their candidate. Unfortunately, I found the Republican Party and their candidate even more disgusting. So I shopped around for a respectable candidate, and settled on Mike Maturen of the American Solidarity Party, which is very much aligned with Catholic principles.

We used to have it.

Again, there are diverse candidates—however, there are no “Catholic” candidates. Everyone gets to cast their vote where they feel it would have the best outcome. At any given time, it is a compromise of Catholic values.

And yet here in Australia we are voting on only one issue, whether marriage should be redefined or not, what compromise is being made here for yes voters who call themselves Catholics? There is no greater good argument, because there is only one issue and we know what the Church teaches on marriage and the family.

Just like with those such as Tim Kaine and Nancy Pelosi, who vote for these things directly.

Today however, as a result of steady improvements in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically non-existent.

I totally agree.

That’s fine, I’m not upset. I stand by what I’ve said.
@josh987654321 I enjoy our debates and my statement wasn’t directed at you. I am a firm believer that discussions foster communities, even if we do think differently. It’s healthy.

And if I thought you were one, you’d know. 🌷

Just like this vote on the redefinition of marriage here in Australia, there is no ‘lesser of two evils’ since there is only one issue and only one evil.
I did not know Democrats were in Australia. In the United States our bishops have given different instructions. They said:
As Catholics we are not single-issue voters. A candidate’s position on a single issue is
not sufficient to guarantee a voter’s support.

@pnewton well, in Australia there is a single issue vote, yet we had a priest no less appear on Q&A and say he would vote yes.

I find myself seeing the same people who call themselves ‘Catholic’ and supported Clinton, are the same ones voting ‘yes’ to this single issue vote here in Australia. So they really let the cat out of the bag.

To say Clinton was the ‘lesser of two evils’ in the USA 2016 election I think is a huge stretch, I think they are naïve or they are really not voting for the lesser of two evils, instead they are at odds with the Church on the sanctity of life and marriage.

How can someone vote in both countries?

Unfortunately, we do not have issue referendums here. It would be simpler if we did, I think. Maybe some day instead of trying to export democracy though the world, we might import some from more democratic countries.

@LittleFlower Thank you for the PM, I retract this in regards to yourself as you were not referring to me and what I’ve said.

We didn’t, but we are not blind and the USA results affect Australia. If it were not for the revolution on marriage and the family in the USA, I do not believe we would be fighting this battle right now.

This revolution on marriage and the family has taken place in all western nations with close ties to the USA, and all since Obama took office. Same with abortion and other issues.

When Bush was in office (I think I was in High School and didn’t pay any attention to politics) but I never thought at the time, we would later have to work so hard to defend the truth of man-woman marriage, which I always thought was common sense.

God Bless You
