Can Catholics be Democrats?

Most arguments against third party voters, like the old split-the-vote saw, reply on faulty assumptions and bad math.
Not when the Democrats look to promote the libertarian party and silence the green party. And of course the GOP just sits around on their hands.

And there’s Ross Perot. Most candidates are not as successful as him, but had he not run, Clinton would have lost.

In 2012 the libertarian vote cost the GOP at least 2 seats in the Senate.

Where it comes more into play is when we have bad candidates. Gary Johnson did pretty well considering his Aleppo gaffe because Trump was a weak candidate and Hillary’s approval rating dropped by 35%.
The need to break the bipartisan death grip the two parties have on our country.
What we need is a community-conscientious, aware and conservative republican party to start. It begins with primarying out certain people and building from there. If we can do this, people will be more attracted to firm principles as the Democratic off-the-rails agenda goes up in flames and their party moves back towards the center away from abortion-worship and post-modernism.

You do realize that such a handy-dandy checklist was something written by the founder of the Catholic apologetics group who runs this board.
maybe but some moral issues carry more weight,
“Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the -application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war, he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion. While the Church exhorts civil authorities to seek peace, not war, and to exercise discretion and mercy in imposing punishment on criminals, it may still be permissible to take up arms to repel an aggressor or to have recourse to capital punishment. There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia” (WRHC 3). WRHC = Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion, General Principles

Hi. I am in RCIA so what I don’t know could fill the ocean. Anyway, I just got torn a new a-hole in a Catholic forum when I mentioned I was democrat. I was told that since democrats support abortion, it is therefore evil and blah blah.

This is what it felt like when I was voting, a party with values I agreed with except abortion. Versus a candidate I felt was going to destroy the earth but supports non-abortion.

This post is not per se to argue whether the President is a good person or not, but just how difficult it was to make a decision.

If there are any democratic Catholics on here, can you explain how you justify your position?

Thanks, Rose
Here’s a Catholic Bishop who was a Democrat and for many decades voted as Democrat, but recently switched to Republican http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/bishop-thomas-tobin-why-i-switched-to-the-republican-party

Just being transparent, I was thinking what took him soooooo long? I was a Democrat, and through college I voted Democrat. And along came 1973 and Roe V Wade. I switched to Republican. And have been there ever since.

Re: the environment

According to science, (not me 😉 ) science says we’ve had multiple ice ages. Really? That means we’ve had multiple warmings too. One could ask, how did all that happen naturally and without people or even inspite of people? I bring this up only to put perspective and values on the issues we’re being challenged with.

Just repeating the Truth
some see it as the surplus coming from the policies of newt gingrich which clinton had to sign.

what is truth? whatever the author wants it to be.

the left wants to say how bad bush was but show me where obama repealed the policies bush put in place? patriot act for example? show me where obama prosecuted those in the banking industry that caused the chaos? now look at the donors of both parties. bush was a progressive tax and spend as was obama. both pushed the debt up.

Speaking of “nothing burger” that would be Trump"s legislative successes so far. Come on–he’s got the Senate, he’s got the House–but as usual it’s always everybody else’s fault. Absolutely no personal responsibility–great role model for kids.
further proof of the one party system; neither wants change

7 years complaining about healthcare and the gop has nothing ready? were they ever really against it? their illegal subsidy should be ended and then both sides would fix or repeal it.

drain the swamp

Im not wishing anyone ill. Just worried that calling world leaders “Rocket man” is insane, unfitting of a President, and is going to get us all killed.
doing nothing has n korea on the verge of becoming a nuclear power.

we could pay like we did in iran; yet, they also are still building rockets

calling him rocket man gets the world focused on what it should be focused on a nuclear n korea.

neither party lines up with everything the Catholic Church teaches.
Good luck, I’ll pray for you.
x2

God Bless
But there is a sense of proportion here. The Democrat party is a corrupt party on all the big issues.

Abortion on demand at any stage of life
same sex marriage
LGBT obsession on “rights”
attack on religion (Johnson amendment)
physician assisted suicide
appoint left wing activist judges
etc etc

Republicans are opposed to all that.

which third party candidate was in full cooperation with the views of the church? i must have missed this candidate.
American Solidarity Party
https://solidarity-party.org/

Candidates:
President: Mike Maturen
Vice-President: Juan Muñoz

Full cooperation? Are you holding out for a perfect party? Good luck, but this party is pretty closely aligned with Catholic values, in my opinion. Please evaluate it by your own standards and let us know.

Josh - who is this priest? I’d like to hear more of his homilies. Thanks for sharing.

So you believe in stealing money by force, and you think this is Catholic? Jesus said give on your own accord, not force others to give their hard earned money to the govt. Abortion is not “blah blah” and this shows you have a calloused attitude about life. Rose, you need to accept that you are nowhere near being a Catholic. It has nothing to do with being a repub or leftist. You simply do not have the right belief system. You are nowhere near. You need to go to confession with a really good priest, and tell him why you believe that stealing and abortion are acceptable for Catholics. Leftists like you ( I have so many in my family) do not believe in the teachings of Jesus at all, and are simply trying to change the Church, which is another grave sin. If you want to sin, remember that you are mostly harming yourself, but you are also harming society, and your children. Jesus’s rules are easy to learn, but seem hard to follow for some people. It does take practice to implement them, but if you are determined, you will. Women are indoctrinated to think being a leftist is more important than Jesus, and this is why so many of our women are on pills, buying dogs instead of having a husband, and worshipping politicians who could care less about them. Good luck!

I’m a member of the ASP and I voted Maturen/Munoz in 2016.

The ASP is the only political party who’s platform is 100% based on Catholic social teaching.

The Republican party is usually pretty close to Catholic teaching regarding social norms, morals, defense and justice.

However, the GOP is usually opposite the Church in regards to immigration, welfare, taxes and financial issues and certain issues like capital punishment.

Likewise, the Democratic Party is usually more in line with the Church on financial issues, welfare, healthcare, death penalty, things like that.

But then the Democratic party directly opposes the Church on things like abortion and euthanasia, morality, and homosexual/trans issues.

The ASP stands 100% in line with the Church on every single issue - healthcare, immigration, abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, finances, welfare, ssi, medicaid, morals in general, defense and justice - name any political issue and time after time the ASP is spot on in full communion with the Church.

However, the problem with our American Solidarity Party is we’re impotent. We have 0 Governorships, 0 people in the Senate, and 0 Congresspeople. Even worse, we have 0 people even in the State legislatures - and we are relatively unknown even amongst Catholics.

We are a pretty obscure party. But I still believe in the ASP because it’s the only political party I can consistently support without compromising my system of morals and ethics.

Essentially, that is what over-taxation is.

Do you think it’s ethical to take so much from future generations?

They are the ones who are going to have to pay it off.

Who believes in stealing money by force?
anyone who believes in obamacare,

you are forcing some people to buy a product they don’t want.

it is estimated millions will voluntarily leave if the mandate/penalty was lifted.

this is stealing money by the force of the government.

to call the obamacare penalty a tax is a joke.

How does one define overtaxation? Trump is proposing tax cuts without corresponding spending cuts, that is definitely taking from future generations.

I just don’t see the difference between republicans and democrats when it comes to fiscal responsibility.

kinghenry17 and SuperLuigi, you talk like only one party is fiscally irresponsible, which is dead wrong. Both major parties overspend. Neither has exercised any control over spending. Republicans dream that the US can meet its expenses with lower taxes. Democrats dream that the US can spend more by taxing the rich. Both sides are driving the nation to ruin.

You would be better off supporting an honest party.
