Can Catholics be Freemasons?

That’s right, the Knights of Columbus do not use the Holy Bible for blasphemy as the Freemasons do without any worry. I particularly am piqued by this part of the Master Mason’s initiation Oath that is sworn by any Christian (ahem) Mason on a Bible in front of the Masonic Altar during his Initiation. (the 3rd Degree)

“I, ________________, of my own free-will and accord, in the presence of Almighty God do hereby and hereon most solemnly and sincerely promise and swear, …that I will not have illegal carnal intercourse with a Master Mason’s wife, his mother, sister, or daughter, nor suffer the same to be done by others, if in my power to prevent.” sacred-texts.com/mas/dun/dun04.htm

And this is sworn on a Bible in which God declares all adultery a sin but the Master Mason gets to use the same Holy Book to only promise not to fool around with his Masonic brothers’ spouses and daughters and mothers. What a ridiculous and reprehensible (old-boys club) oath!

Bottom line is all that is required to enter Freemasonry is that you agree you believe in a god (G.A.O.T.U. - Grand Architect of the Universe). As the British mainstream and secular writer Martin Short pointed out in his bestseller in England Inside the Brotherhood amazon.ca/Inside-Brotherhood-Explosive-Secrets-Freemasons/dp/0586070656 ,after years of research and interviews with tons of Freemasons themselves, it does not matter one bit if you believe G.A.O.T.U. to be Satan or Jesus Christ. As the Masonic poster alluded, Freemasonry does not discriminate. That’s why Aleister Crowley had no problems going through the first 3 degrees of Freemasonry before he went on to darker Satanic rituals. It doesn’t matter.

In fact the more one reads the works of recognized Masonic ritualists like Wilmhurst and Pike and others, it would probably be easier to become a Mason and learn the “mysteries” of Freemasonry if one enjoys dabbling in the occult than if one is a Christian. An occultist can at least understand some of Masonry’s symbolism.

Just an observation.
Ralph,

Thanks for your observation.

I do not know where you got your source material from, but i’ve never seen anything like that before; tho’ in all honesty if I had, I would not be disposed to discuss it with the profane.

Can you verify this question? Do the Knights of Columbus discriminate against non-Catholics seeking membership in their organization?

I’m very curious if you’ll answer it.

I have been reading this thread quite intently. The obvious answer to the OP is no. There are tons of documents just by doing a search of Catholics and Freemasons.

Gamewell, nice dodge of the not having to recognize the section of the oath in the 3rd degree. Typical answer that a Mason is trained to give of neither confirm or deny it. You know that it is accurate though may not be exact word for word and if you don’t I would ask to try you coming into a lodge during purging.

Though I do like the question as to the K of C since I am curious my self as I don’t know the answer.

gamewell, you addressed the question to Ralph but you are responding to my quote. The source material which you claim ignorance of is from a legitimate Masonic source, again:
Duncan’s Masonic Ritual and Monitor. Here you can even swing a purchase on Amazon amazon.com/Duncans-Ritual-Freemasonry-Malcolm-Duncan/dp/0679506268

No Masonic Lodge in North America has claimed Duncan illegitimate and, on the contrary, Masons who leave the Brotherhood echo that those are the oaths they made in each of the first degrees of Masonry. Duncan’s is from New York, your state.

Knights of Columbus are Catholic yes and they sometimes fulfill honourary roles inside Catholic Churches in greeting bishops, archbishops, or even Cardinals to one’s Catholic parish.

Catholics of course can join secular benevolent clubs available to all faiths but not ones religious ones like Freemasonry though which commit blasphemy in their oaths, have eliminated Jesus Christ from all prayers, which in York Rite gives God a Pagan Name, and which preaches Gnosticism, Naturalism, and basically Religious Gobbledygook inside a Masonic Temple - these were all findings found not just by the Catholics, but by the Lutheran Missouri Synod Church (which I linked), and increasingly in Anglicanism and was condemned also in a Methodist Church working group on Freemasonry. I can again give links if you wish.

On Freemasonry and K o C, Freemasonry imposes an oath, and the Kof C requires a fraternal pledge. There is a big difference.
  1. An oath requires the oath-taker to invoke God to witness the promise being made, and subjects the oath-taker to God’s divine promise. This is evidenced by the phrase “I solemnly swear” and “so help me God.” The KofC does not have this language. Freemasonry does, because Masonry uses oaths, not pledges.
  2. The Masonic oaths are not read to the candidate in advance, so he really doesn’t know what he will be required to promise. The KofC pledge is read to the candidate in advance.
  3. Freemasonry’s oaths are also imposed with self-curses (having my throat cut across, and my tongue torn out, etc.) These self-curses mean that the candidate is worthy of the mutilation and death that the penalties symbolize if he ever fails to keep his oath. This also means that Freemasonry takes its business very seriously - they can’t just call their organization a social club, otherwise they wouldn’t require oaths with self-curses. If they say its all a joke, then they are calling God to witness a lie, which is blasphemous. This also makes their search for godliness and morality also a joke.

Or let’s look at the authorative Masonic Encyclopedia written by Robert Macoy, a Past Deputy Grand Master from your state gamewell, New York. amazon.ca/Dictionary-Freemasonry-Robert-Macoy/dp/0517692139

Here is how Macoy describes the Biblical Babylonian Exile :Babylonish Captivity consists in the “Jews having fallen under the displeasure of the Almighty by deviating from true Masonic principles.” Do you gamewell believe the Exile in the Bible occurred because the Jews had simply broken Masonic principles. Tell me, what Masonic principles had they broken as I know there were no Freemasonic Lodges in Judea or Babylon at the time.

Or Mackoy’s definition of “Apostate Masons” “It would be equally useless and vain to deny that we have occasionally found amongst ourselves individuals who have violated their solemn pledges, and SINNED against the rites of the MASONIC FAITH. Still it does not detract from the merit of the institution, anymore than the apostates, from Judas Iscariot who …failed the Christian religion”.

Beautiful touch. Apparently, one can now sin against Masonic Faith in the same way one sins against God. And this comes from a 33rd Degree Robert Macoy, widely regarded as authoratative, and who was Past Deputy Grand Master of New York (your state gameplan).

Do you disagree with these statements of an authorative Mason? That “sinning” against Masonic faith is akin to sinning against Christ.

Tell me again: Was there a Speculative Freemasonic Body with secret esoteric knowledge at the Building of the Temple of Solomon? Masonry’s adepts believe this a fact, do you gamewell? Simple, simple question.

Workingman, thanks for calling gamplan out on his “dodge” of the 3rd Degree Oath which is accurate (enough) as you and others alluded to in another thread. Glad to see you back for two reasons:
  1. Your knowledge of Freemasonry;
  2. I can’t get enough of your orange toque. Is it fishing or hunting season now?

Hiya KyivAndrew,

I was staying quiet and following this thread from afar. It has been interesting reading. Then I saw the blatant dodge. Like gamewell said it does not need to be discussed with the profane. Standard answer.

Thank you for the welcome back. I will have to knock off the dust:D. So when do the other masonic brothers swarm in. I aint seen them in a while either on the boards.

It is Bamby slaying time. The fish get a reprieve till the ice comes in thick enough to walk on.

    (from Salza).
That’s the difference between K of C and Freemasonry.

Tell me again, was there a Free masonic Body at the building of the Temple of Solomon and do you believe Hiram Abif to be a true character involved and murdered therein? And do you agree the Ancient Jews fell into Babylonian Captivity as the Masonic Dictionary attests because they broke Masonic principles? What Masonic principles were there at the time of the Exile or for that matter what Freemasonic body existed at the building of the Temple of Solomon? No legitimate historian of the ancient world in his right mind would claim what is being claimed by Masonic authorities.
Unfortunately, you’ve got it completely wrong.

As I painstakingly told you in an earlier post, we will have to agree to disagree! 🙂

Thank you for the compliment.
gamewell,

Not to be mean or rude as that is not my intent. It was only a half complement. If masonic ritual is going to be discussed lets not pull the card of not discussing it with the profane.

O.K. Bamby again time. Weather is good.😃 No on Freemasonry one guy on this thread came in on Knights Templar-Masonic continuities being the source of Catholicism’s rejection of Freemasonry. I mean even a Masonic author of an authoritative book laughed at the fantasy of Templar to Freemason evolution.

That poster almost wrote in the same manner as another defender of Masonry from Texas on that other thread. Well, now this gamewell seems to be pushing along so I really am glad you are posting here now. Jump in at any time. 😃

gamewell,

does the Episcopal Church have a official stance on freemasonry like the Catholic Church, Lutheran Church (LCMS, WELS, maybe ELCA), Southern Baptist I believe also hold a big firm no on it.

Unfortunately, you’ve got it completely wrong.

How do I know what we are disagreeing about when you haven’t answered the simple question of whether today’s Freemasonry goes back as a secret society all the way to the building of the Temple of Solomon and beyond. You still have not told me if you believe this. Simple Question. Why won’t you answer it? Embarrassment?

Andrew,

Your fishing. Its not going to work. So let it go.

Oh my.

I am reminded by this thread of back in the day when the X-Files was popular, and I used to post in character on forums and in chatrooms as the Cigarette-Smoking Man. I used to love coming up with clever ways to dismiss musings of the curious regarding alleged extraterrestrials … the topic of ETs being purely fictional of course, and plausible deniability being the order of the day … or night.

It also reminds me of a couple of X-Files episode taglines:

“Deny everything.”
“Deceive, Inveigle, Obfuscate.”
for instance.

:hey_bud:

P.S. No, Catholics cannot be Freemasons. Not clear enough? Okay then … Catholics who follow the Pope cannot be Freemasons.

Andrew,

Your fishing. Its not going to work. So let it go.
No I’m not fishing. Everything I asked was upfront. Was there a FreeMasonic body at the building of the Temple of Solomon which can be traced to modern day Freemasonry? I’m not fishing because I know many Masons believe this unhistorical fantasy to be true. I was asking if you personally like other Freemasons literally believe it as well so I can at least know how well you know your history. That’s all. There is nothing untoward in it. I’m not fishing. I’m asking your personal belief, that is all. Answer it, or avoid it. 🤷

gamewell,

I would like to know does the Episcopal Church have a condemnation of freemasonry like the CC, Lutheran Church (LCMS, WELS, maybe ELCA) and I believe Southern Baptist?

How does one discern the following as a Christian and a Mason.

Blood oaths that are not of Christ

oath swore by the Entered Apprentice of first degree, " …binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea, at low-water mark." **The Master Mason swears, **"…under no less penalty than that of having my body severed in two, my bowels taken from thence and burned to ashes, the ashes scattered before the four winds of heaven…"

These oaths were not always symbolic as they are now claimed to be.

Or the raising of the dead a highlight of a new Master Mason.

The final “Blue Lodge” degree that that candidate is laid out "in death"and is raised from the dead by the “Worshipful Master” of the Lodge (representing King Solomon), using the “strong grip” (or “Lion’s Paw”)of the Master Mason.

When did king Solomon get the power to raise the dead? This also clearly smacks in the face of Matt 28:18 where it is Christ power alone.

How about the five points of fellowship do you remember this. The sacred word, Mah-Hah-Bone.
Any thing passed from one Mason to another in this form is a kept secret murder and treason excepted. Just a fyi in the Royal Arch degree murder and treason are not excepted.

Masonry claims not to be a religion but Albert Pike himself says in the Morals and Dogmas (p213-214) “Every Masonic lodge is a temple of religion, and its teachings are instructions in religion…this is true religion revealed to the ancient patriarchs; which masonry has taught for many centuries, and which it will continue to teach as long as time
endures.”

Albert Pike also wrote in Morals and Dogmas (p718) “Masonry propagates no creed except it’s own most simple sublime one; that universal religion, taught by nature and reason.”
So by this statement Masonry can not agree that the Bible is the inerrant , God-Breathed, or infallible.

How does one discern this and still call them selves a Christian while involved with Masonry.

gamewell,

I would like to know does the Episcopal Church have a condemnation of freemasonry like the CC, Lutheran Church (LCMS, WELS, maybe ELCA) and I believe Southern Baptist?
If they have, they’ve not made me aware of it. I have seen posted here links to comments made by Archbishop of Canterbury and a few other related articles; but none of them forbidding membership in the Masons. They don’t think its such a good idea but haven’t stated to my knowledge otherwise that membership is forbidden.

I am still having trouble wrapping my mind around this. Either the oath in Freemasonry is of equal seriousness as the oath in a court of law. If it is, the Catholic Church is wrong and Freemasons are not taking oaths over trivial matters. If they are are not, the Catholic Church is right and Masons are invoking the name of God over trivial matters, thus committing a mortal sin.

If the oaths are serious, please explain how.

Ralph,

I really don’t know how to explain it anymore then I have. All I can suggest is that you research it more on some Masonic websites.

Give this one a try; maybe it’ll answer your questions better then I can.

Actually, no, it does not. It gives examples of the Oath of Office of the President of the United States and the oath taken at the induction into the military. The Church would see both of these as being over serious matter, not trivial.

Maybe my question is bad. Do Masons hold that protecting the secrets of Freemasonry to be of equal weight as telling the truth in court, upholding and defending the United States and the US Constitution, and protecting the citizens of this country from all threats foreign and domestic?

I could care less about the penalties, it is the actual case of using the Name of God to take the oath that is the issue

It is a yes or no question. Either they are of the same seriousness or they are not.

And I do want to commend that site for being honest about racism in Freemasonry.
Regrettably, though, some Grand Lodges in the Southern United States have clung tenaciously to their segregated ways thus exposing the racism charge further.
It is a fair and truthful statement, and one that they were right to make. As to it being a temorary situation, I cannot say. Who knows what will happen in the next 100 years.
