I go to Mass every Sunday and to a Baptist service with my wife most Sundays.

People, at least where I live, are friendlier and more outgoing at the Protestant service. Also, there Protestant Church has more programs at night like Bible studies, etc. The Catholic Parish where I belong has NOTHING at night, no groups,no Bible Studies. It consists of mostly elderly people so outreach is during the day. . .

Which church has better church potlucks?

Luther added the word ALONE to one version of the bible and if i am not mistaken, many Bibles after he died said th same hting… he added the word alone to a psg in romans that says we are saved through faith…

James 2:12 (& many others… such as St Mt 25:31- and st Mt 18:23… )refutes the notion that we are saved by faith alone… Faith without works is dead…

dead faith, no faith… no difference…

that doesn’t mean we have to be doing good works (soup kitchen work, etc) 24/7… although that wouldn’t be a bad idea… It is hardly possible, really…

but even when we are resting, we should be praying and thinking of God and/or ways in which we can serve him and others… If we are not thinking of Him all the time we will think of “stupid things” – vanity… and fall into sin…

and then we will, through sin, get further and fruther away form Him and could possibly eventually lose salvation…
Why not; it is explicitly implied by the message of faith. God has always redeemed man by his faith in god; true with the OT as well as the NT. One looked forward to the Savior; the other looks back to the Savior. No circumcison nor water baptism will do anthing except have you miss a piece of flesh or get wet. What about women in the OT; were they circumcised…LOL 🙂

I However, we are not bound to the moral law as a system for salvation. What do you mean that we are bound to the law? Protestant believe that we must put to death the deeds of the flesh through the Spirit. Nobody is proclaiming antinomianism. Your answer to being bound to the law is the difference between a false gospel and the gospel of God which transforms a sinner to the image of Christ.
so if some born-again person who believed in OSAS came at you to kill you and/or your family, you would just think (assuming you survived ) that god was just going to let him into Heaven as soon as he died… doesn’t even need to do the “work” of repentance…? I don’t understand how protestants can justify acts of evil… which i feel is what osas is saying… that evil acts are not that bad and won’t keep you out of Heaven…
We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ,
Catholics believe htis also… but they believe that faith means doing everything Jesus says… feeding the hungry, etc (St Mt 25:31). In that psg the ones who do not do these charitable works end up in HELL…
In step with the OP, maybe Catholics can learn the gospel of God from Protestants? The gospel needs to be clearly understood and received by all Christians (Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, Anglicans, etc).
i beg your pardon?

if a Catholic goes to daily Mass for 3 years in a row, s/he will hear the entire bible… and some Catholics go to Church every day for FAR more than 3 years… True, theere are plenty of younger ones who do not know the Bible as well as Mr. Baptist Bob … 😃 but even the ones who only go every Sunday… hear an awful lot because in the Catholic Church , @ Mass, there is almost 5 times as much Scripture reading (verbatim) than at a protestant church… At a lot of protestant churches, the pastor reads a LINE of scirpture and then homilizes for … sometimes 20 or so minutes…then he reads another one, homilizes… and so forth… At the Catholic Church, the whole entire passage is read and then another and another before the priest begins to speak on the subject(s) brought up by the passages…

Going to Mass or church services, or reading the Bible, or doing good works etc does not get you to Heaven. On what basis will you be in Heaven. If God asked why I should let you into my eternal Heaven, what would be your answer?

it seems you need an RCIA class. you don’t u/stand Catholicism… I can tell by waht you say… Don’t feel bad, a lot of Catholics don’t either… :(😦
i was one… until i catechized myself about 13 yrs ago or so… had to because no one bothered to catechize me…

what i learned blew me away… i learned the faith at RCIA classes, through reading and from going to Mass as often as i could…

what blew me away was that things like Purgatory are in the Bible… I was raised Catholic but didn’t know that and a lot of other things… because my own parents weren’t taught well…

and i know that my life would have / could have been TOTALLY different if i had known then what i know now… which is a very sad thing… If you only ***knew ***how sad it is to say that… all the “details” of my life story… 😦

I will never outgrow my great appreication for what the Catholic Church has done for me…

i learned the hard way that there really is only ONE Church… i think somewhere deep inside i always knew this… even when uncatechized… I never found fault w/ the Catholic Church as some ex-Catholics do… its like i just knew all my life that the Cathoic Church was THE ONE… without even learning… I have no idea why that was the case when it is not always the case w/ others… one of those mysteries of life… but even knowing that the Church was the true one didn’t do me any good, to speak of… so i am SO thankful i catechized myself… am very thankful 4 what i learned… i cannot express in words how thankful i am–i almost didn’t… (long story).

i really feel sorry for those who do not khow the Cahtolic faith…or practice it (some know it but don’t practice it…) If they are truly Christian they will know it some day… If they don’t learn it on this earth they will learn it in Purgatory… They will be, in Purgatoyr, “catechized”… 🙂

Back to the thread, and please keep in mind that I converted to Catholicism after 47 years of enthusiastic involvement with the evangelical Protestants!
  1. Catholics can learn that it is possible to have lots of fun without ever drinking alcohol.
  2. Catholics can learn to sing songs and hymns and spiritual songs to one another and to God in a full, hearty voice.
  3. Catholics can learn how to prepare a three-minute personal testimony and have it ready at all times to share with anyone who asks.

Going to Mass or Church services, or reading the Bible, or doing good works etc does get you to Heaven because knowing God’s Son gets you to Heaven and that is what happens at Mass… you get to know Jesus intimately. You are there in His Real Presence and you are also in the presence of the angels and saints… who participate at every Mass…

protestants spend more time in Purgatory than Catholics… i think it is mostly because they don’t have the Mass… although t here are other reasons…

i believe and agree with all except Numero Uno…

this made me laugh…

**A Catholic needs to learn how to have fun without drinking?? !!!

you don’t know the Catholics i know… self included… but uhh… what’s wrong with drinking??**

Curious; how will you reconcile the differences from the Baptist point to the Catholic view concerning salvation? They are almost polar opposites; so which side you ultimately land will most likey determine your true relationship with the Savior. Soemthing worth looking into since eternity is forever and the Way, the Truth and the Life is written in and by the Living Word, which is Christ Jesus.
Nope, neither church wholly determines my relationship with God. That is between God and me. The churches are there to guide me, along with the Word and the Holy Spirit. I *worship *at church (both), but *Jesus *is who saved me. So whether I worship at a Catholic church or a Baptist one, I worship the same God in both.

And they are not as opposite as you think. Just different means to the same end. Faith is at the core of it all.

This is my best answer to the question:

***the thing i have learned best from protestants is:

That i don’t want to be protestant… ***

not that i needed to learn such a thing… but when i see how un-Catholic protestants are… Yikes!!!

that’s scary to me…

They not only are not Catholic themselves but they don’t have a clue (a lot of them) about what it means to be Catholic… the true teachings of the Church…

Please reconsider you answer by reading my two signature links by Pope Benedict and the college professor. When God asked you why He should let you into His eternal Heaven, what will be your answer… that you partook in the Eucharist 100 times? Protestants don’t go to Purgatory because Jesus is our pass and go card in the life of Monopoly of the Saints.

this is not true, although i can understand you saying it becaue i woiuld have said the same hting years ago… before i catechized myself.

as one saint said it ***“The Church IS Christ”… ***

i really can’t add much to that…

except to say that my experiences in life… (been all over the board, spiritually and in other ways) tells me that that is SO true… In fact, i had this same exact thought long before i heard of this saint who said this…

he won’t even need to ask me and i won’t need to answer…

The Church is not Christ. Jesus Christ is the 2nd person of the Godhead. We the church are not God. Now you guys are really starting to worry me.

***there is one way i will give up my Catholic faith and going to Mass as often as i can:

If i am on a deserted island where there is no Catholic Church and i have no way of getting to one… ***

and i wouldn’t give it up then… i just wouldn’t be able to have the Eucharist… 😦

Then why in the world did you even start this thread?? :hmmm: Seriously?

I want to speak to those who believe that Protestants don’t really study the Bible, but only know a few verses out of context.

I think you’re kidding yourselves.

Perhaps this is becoming the case nowadays with younger Protestants.

But if you think that’s the way many older Protestants are, you’re really kidding yourselves.

I’m 52, and I spent my first 47 years in the evangelical Protestant churches.

We studied the Bible intensively. Constantly.

As a teenager, I voluntarily memorized most of the Book of James, and studied it verse by verse for several months.

I did several “Memorization” programs, and as a result, memorized hundreds of verses of Scripture.

Most of these studies were done by studying the verses in context, so we didn’t just memorize out-of-context words.

In the Christian and Missionary Alliance (a denomination) Bible quizzing program, teenagers memorize entire books of the Bible, and study them verse by verse. During the Regional and National Quiz Competitions, they are asked questions that require them to not only spit out memorized verses, but also to understand those verses.

Although the AWANA Clubs require rote memorization of verses without necessarily requiring understanding, there are plenty of other Protestant children’s clubs in which kids not only memorize verses, but apply various learning techniques to help them understand the verse. For example, in Pioneer Clubs, we would ask, “Is there a promise? A command? An encouragement? A warning?” And we would train the kids to apply the verses to their lives and help them come up with practical daily strategies to truly live God’s word (Be ye doers of the Word, not just hearers.)

During most of my adult and teen years, I attended at least one Bible study each week, usually more than one. Some of the Bible studies were quite intense. In college, I attended a study of the Gospels in which the pastor helped up to put all the stories and events in chronological order–very fascinating and quite useful.

I attended many book studies; i.e., we would spend a season or an entire year studying one book of the Bible.

On my own, I did many Bible studies of individual books. One of the most fascinating studies that I did was of the Minor Prophets. I was determined to learn and understand the context and history of these small books in the Old Testament.

Many Protestants get involved with multi-year intense studies like Bible Study Fellowship. These programs run for a few hours one evening a week, and the student is required to study for several hours outside of the classes. Truants are not allowed to continue the study.

Finally, most Protestants feel compelled to have a daily Quiet Time (or Morning Watch or Daily Devotions or Personal Bible Study time). They read and pray over the Scriptures.

I could go on and on, but I hope you’re getting the idea. Many Protestants really, truly do have an incredible knowledge of the Bible. If you meet up with Protestants and assume that they know little, you are setting yourself up for defeat bigtime.

IMO, this is one of the major reasons why Protestants convert to Catholicism–because they DO know their Bibles, and when they finally take the time to actually visit a Catholic Church and attend a Mass, they recognize everything as Scriptural! That’s what happened to my husband and me–we couldn’t believe how many things in the Catholic Church made so much sense when we compared it with our Bibles! And many things in our Bibles that had always been confusing to us now made sense!

So be glad that Protestants know their Bibles. It makes your job as a Catholic easier!

Keep in mind that many evangelicals are so involved in various ministries in their churches that they usually don’t have time to visit a Catholic Mass. It was a rare, rare Sunday when I wasn’t playing the piano or teaching a children’s Sunday school or Children’s Church on Sundays. I very seldom missed church, unless I was giving birth or being very sick. I would not have had the time to attend a Mass other than a wedding or funeral Mass. So when Protestants visit your parish and attend Mass, something is happening or has happened. Be kind just in case it was something awful. In our case, we were kicked out of our Protestant church, and attending Mass was our way of obeying Hebrews 10:25.
