This brings up a question I have always wondered. What happens to the children of atheists? They will be obviously indoctrinated to think religion is useless/stupid/irrelevant so they will not pay much heed to evangelization. So what happens to them if raised in a proper christian family would follow the Lord?
I say the parents should be punished two fold for dragging another soul down with them. Of course I do not make the rules but this sounds only logical. A quick example If you yourself have overdrawn with your bank account and you yet use someone else’s and overdraw from their’s too you should be held accountable for all the expenses you incurred.

Yes you can baptize the child. The previous post is completely correct of how you can only do it in danger of life ,but you can do it if you want to save the child. I know a few people who have baptized a child an the parents don’t know. Of you have no Holy Water at home you can use regular water all you have to do is bless the child in the name of the cross on its forehead or on its chest and say you baptize the child. Please Please Please baptize the child if you can’t convince the parents because don’t let the baby pay for the problems with the issue that the parents can’t see that Catholicism is the one and true religion. Baptize the baby and God is all for this do don’t doubt it. God Bless and Good luck

As was allready mentioned only where there is immediate danger of death and quite frankly if it is the wish of the parents. You do not have the right in any circumstance to abrogate the rights of the parents not to have thier child baptized.

That’s one of the reasons it is not allowed. If we expect Christian parents to be able to make decisions about their own children and not be interfered with by others, we have to give the same respect to non-Christians.
The appropriate thing to do in this situation is to pray for the child and also for its parents. This adds to the spiritual well-being of all, and atheists shouldn’t mind because they wouldn’t think it can do anything.

That would be very wrong. The child would then be bound by canon law to do such things as attend Mass, receive the Sacraments and marry in the Church but would have no reasonable hope of being brought up with enough knoweledge to do so. What a horrible thing to do to an innocent child.

Neocat does not seem to have a true understanding of the Catholic faith not to mention the most basic moral foundation of the Church.

Keep in mind that baptisms outside the Catholic church (i.e., Protestantism) is a valid baptism within the Catholic Church. Are they bound by Catholic doctrine too?That would be very wrong. Quite true but what we are talking about is baptizing an infant (not in danger of death) WITHOUT parental authority and not by the clergy but a lay person. This is against Church doctrine any way you look at it!

No. The difference is that when a Catholic baptizes a baby out of necessity, the baby is considered Catholic. When a Protestant baptizes someone, that person is in the Church but not cannonically Catholic.

Baptism brings with it many responsibilities that the child will be unable to fulfill when he grows up if he is raised by atheists - for example, the obligation to receive a Catholic education, the obligation to marry within the Church, and the obligation to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day. Remember, it would be a Catholic emergency baptism - he would not be getting baptized into a non-Catholic community.
