Can I be Baptized Again

Hello,
I have been Baptized into the Lutheran faith and am becoming Catholic. I know its silly of me, but would I be able to be baptized again? I know there is only one baptism and I would not be Sacramentally Baptized again, but would it still be possible - if only for symbolic reasons?

No, unless there is some reason to doubt that your baptism was done using water and the Trinitarian name. If there is doubt, you would be conditionally baptized.
 
  1. Yes, you can be baptized again, but not in the Catholic Church.
  2. However, it will have no effect. The indelible mark was made upon your soul at the Lutheran baptism.
 
You will need to produce some formal record of your baptism i.e. the certificate or church record prior to completing RCIA and receiving the sacraments of confirmation and Eucharist. And of course everyone goes to confession too. There is no need to be "re-baptized if your baptism met the conditions mentioned by the previous post. Everyone in my RCIA last year had already received a valid baptism.
From your question, I can’t really tell your concern. Is it with the validity of the baptism, or something else?

I have no concern with my original baptism, and I have a good understanding of what the Catholic Church teaches about one baptism for all.
I know that I cannot be re-baptized because my original baptism was valid and it did leave an indelible mark on my soul.
My question was simply if I could receive a “second Baptism” in a completely symbolic way to align myself with the true Church of Christ. It is not something I think need to be done, or that I have a strong urge to have done. I just had the idea pop into my mind and so I ask.
Remember what I am asking is with full knowledge that I have a valid baptism it is simply asking if there are purely symbolic baptisms as well.

You are fine. The Church teaches that anyone, even an atheist, with the proper intent, and using the proper form (“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”) and matter (water), may validly baptize. You will make a profession of faith, which is your entry into the faith.
 
I don’t think they do that. However, I believe you will find the Easter Vigil and the rites involved with becoming Catholic to be very meaningful. My husband & I went through RCIA last year, & Holy Week will never be the same for me. The Easter Vigil is when we had our confirmation & 1st Communion. There were also a few other rites during the year for the candidates and catechumens prior to Holy Week. The entire year was great!

No, there is no such thing as symbolic baptism in the Church. It would be sacrilege to the actual Baptism to insinuate a Baptism that is merely symbolic.

No. As you know, some Sacraments can only be performed once. Baptism is one of them, for a Catholic. The only exception would be if the person had no idea if they had been Baptized before and there was doubt as to whether one had ever been performed. That would be a conditional Baptism. That is not the case here.

Do you feel some need? You will be Catholic. I would speak to a priest; he can reassure you.

no priest would do it once he was assured of the facts of your baptism, it would be a sacrilege and a grave abuse of the sacrament.

You are baptized, there is no possible symbolism you could attach to any attempt at rebaptism that can be greater than the very real nature of your baptism, the eternal seal it placed on your soul, and the graces and benefits you received from that sacrament. The “second baptism” you will receive is that of the Holy Spirit when you make your profession of faith and are confirmed.

When you make your First Confession, you will confess all of your sins since the time of your Baptism, and this will be a kind of “second baptism” since it will wash away all of your actual sins. There will be no water involved, however.

When you make use of holy water (which you can do as often as you want, simply by dipping your fingers in and making the sign of the Cross) this is a memorial of your baptism that washes away your venial sins.

No! You can only be baptised once. I believe Lutheran baptisms are considered as valid by the Catholic Church so you shouldn’t need a conditional baptism. There is no such thing as a symbolic baptism. To simulate baptism would be a sacrilege.

When you are received in to the Catholic Church you will be confirmed and renew your bapstismal promises then.

Since you have been validly baptized the way to align yourself with the true Church of Christ will be via the sacrament of Confirmation.

It is also a sacrament and thus not merely a symbol.

God provides. We only need to show up with an open heart! 🙂

No you cannot have that.

I was a Methodist (validly baptised) before converting and was not re-baptised either for real or symbolic reasons. It will not be done even if you ask.
 
Mberg3, Catholics renew our baptismal promises every easter at the Vigil. This is a beautiful Mass, and the renewal of our promises is one of the reasons why I go.

We also renew our baptismal promises when we recieve the sacrament of confirmation. If you are not confirmed the Catholic Church, you will have a chance to stand and in the presence of a Bishop and publically renew your baptismal promises according to Catholic beliefs when you recieve that sacrament.

In the mean time, is it possible to ask a priest to allow you to renew your promises according to Catholic beliefs? Maybe the priest can work something out for you to do so publically? I don’t know if this is allowed or not according to the rules. If it is allowed, I think it would be a wonderful public expression of faith. Maybe a priest or deacon can do it in the narthex of the Church just before Mass and give you a sprinkling of holy water? I really don’t know if this is possible.
