Can I be forgiven of mortal sin if I'm not allowed to be Catholic because of my parents?

I don’t see anyone on board trying to get her to break the 6th commandment

Thank you, Clare, for telling me about this. I knew it applies to unbaptized catechumens but I thought since I had already been baptized that I no longer “fit the criteria” but I realize now that God is merciful enough to allow someone in my situation this grace as well.

i have corrected. meant to type 6th, and many here are bordering upon doing that.

If we are talking about the command to honor thy mother and father, biblically it is the 5th commandment. I assumed this is the one you were talking about but I may be wrong.

You are welcome to take part in Catholic mass and when Holy Communion lines form, receive a blessing from the priest by folding your arms over your chest. This will likely signify your willingness to become Catholic one day. I am also pretty certain there will be nothing held against you for using Holy Water and making the sign of the Cross before and after Mass.

No one’s told him to commit adultery either!

If you mean the 4th (5th in the Protestant version), no one has told him to engage in general disobedience to his parents. Obviously, a command which is contrary to divine law is no more binding when given by a parent than when it is given by a civil government.

Oh! I never even noticed that the order is different in Catholicism, my bad.

I think the main worry he has is going behind my parents’ backs to contact a priest. I can see where he would be concerned because I am also worried about destroying the trust between me and my parents. I understand that I cannot love my parents more than I love God (Mt 10:37) but I don’t want to completely go against their orders on my life while I’m under them. Even Jesus was obedient to going back with Mary even though He was about His Father’s business in the temple. Thank you for your support though!

Oh! I never knew about this sign. Thank you for informing me of it. Right now I can’t go to Mass, but my best friend is Catholic so I may be able to go one day with her. When I do, I’ll make sure to do this.

Bravo! And now you are like a little sister to some of us, I may not be the best one to vouch in heaven, but I am sure your efforts are noted here.

I don’t see any reason not to contact a priest to get some advice about your situation. I mean, you’re posting here, so you have internet access, and most parish websites have contact info on them.

What do you mean, “they don’t approve of you going to Mass under their reign?” Are you dependent upon them for transportation? If so, you are excused from the obligation to attend Mass, just as an elderly person without transportation to Mass is.

She has no obligation anyway, as she is not a Catholic yet. Don’t misunderstand, OP! It would be wonderful if you could go, and anyone who knew you were new would be very welcoming, I’m sure, so if you ever get the chance to attend, look for a friendly person to whisper ‘Can you help me follow what’s happening?’ to.

But don’t let anyone make you feel guilty about not going, in your situation.

While you’re unable to attend you can learn the prayers and learn about the saints be yourself, discover which saint you would like as yours for confirmation. I’m sure you could find a Mass online to watch and easily find the readings of the day to read each day.

Thanks for POSTING

Not to worry; GOD is on your side:slightly_smiling_face:

God makes possible a contingency plan that the Church terms: PERFECT ACT OF CONTRITION

This means that our SORROW [contrition] is based on [MUST BE BASED ON] Love of God MORE SO than the fear of hell.

So one’s contrition MUST be sincere which is evidenced by a FIRM personal commitment not to sin that that manner again WITH GOD’S GRACE. [offered & accepted].

Here is what I pray daily:

Oh my God
I AM truly sorry for all of my sins and DO fear the loss of heaven and the pains of hell.

BUT so MUCH more because they offend YOU My God who are worthy of ALL of my love. [which I desire to give to you]

I FIRMLY resolve; with the help of THY grace to amend my ways; and confess my sins AS SOON AS I AM ABLE.

“Amend MY ways” means to make a serious effort to AVOID the “Near occasion of sin”

I pray this helps you, PRAY very much and pray this or a similar prayer daily. Bed time is recommended

Patrick
