Hey all

So I’m being confirmed this upcoming Pentecost and I have been looking through The lives of MANY different saints. I have heard that its okay to choose a female saint for confirmation, although it is not custom, but many of my favorite saints just so happen to be female, namely: Saint Catherine of Siena. Truly one of my favorite saints is Saint Catherine of Siena, but I am not entirely sure what the masculine equivalent to “Catherine” would be, or if I should refrain entirely from choosing her.
I have also heard that one male equivalent name to Catherine is the Irish/gaelic name “cathar”, but I was curious if there was any others.

Thoughts?

1)Who told you it’s not customary to choose a female saint?
  1. I don’t think “Catherine” has a male equivalent. Would appreciate if someone informs me if there is.

Pick any saint you want. The most influential saints in my life are female saints.

Edited to add.
For irony perhaps Joan of Arc would be a better choice…

People gathered around St Catherine during her lifetime, men and women. They became known as Caterinati.

It would be good to have another person join her little group! Choosing her would be great.

Catlin and Catterson are surnames derived from Catherine, and sometimes used as men’s names.

There is also the rare man’s name Catharinus. The assistant to Edwin Stanton, our Secretary of war in the Civil War, had the euphonious name of General Catharinus Putnam Buckingham. It seems to be more common in the Netherlands.

Catalino shows up in Spanish -speaking countries as a man’s name.

Catarino is a man’s name in Italy and Portugal, as well as being a surname.

Am just now reading up on her. Amazing woman - inspired an elderly hermit to leave his cell and join her. At age 20, spoke truth to power and persuaded/convinced/shamed Pope Gregory XVI into leaving Avignon and returning to Rome. Her short life was one that changed so many things forever after.

Yes you can choose St. Catherine. I chose a male said t even though I am a female. You don’t need to find a male version of her name or anything.
