RosaryCrusader: since you have so vehemently bashed the “Protestant” Bibles; I would ask that you respond to my Post- cut and pasted below.

Also, see my Post #57.
Yes, I will respond.

Why is there a RSV and a RSV-CE if there are no problems with the translation?

Nobody has said anything about burning your neighbor’s bible. You can only destroy what is yours.

Would you have any qualms about burning anti-Catholic material? Jack Chick pamphlets?

Yes, I will respond.

Why is there a RSV and a RSV-CE if there are no problems with the translation?
The RSV was accepted with very few changes. Here are a few examples:

Matthew 19: 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."[a] Footnotes: a. Matthew 19:9 Some manuscripts add and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery; other manuscripts except for sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery
**
Matthew 19:** 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity,[a] and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a divorced woman, commits adultery." ** Footnotes: a. Other ancient authorities, after unchastity, read makes her commit adultery. b. Other ancient authorities omit and he who marries a divorced woman, commits adultry

Matthew 27: 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood;[a] see to it yourselves.” Footnotes: a. Matthew 27:24 Some manuscripts* this righteous blood*, or *this righteous man’s blood
*
Matthew 27: 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this righteous man’s blood;[a] see to it yourselves.” Footnotes: a. Other authorities omit righteous or man’s

What great doctrinal differences do you find in these examples?**

Anna, I am sorry but I don’t know the answer to your question. And I don’t see any problems with you holding on to your Protestant Bibles. They may not contain all the information they should, and they may have been altered, but if nothing else they are interesting comparison material.
I personally would have problems burning any Bible version. But then I would also have problems burning the Koran, the Talmud, and probably even the Book of Mormon. If it is a book that millions of people base their religion on, then I believe it deserves at least that much respect. Besides, I think burning books is never the answer. You can’t burn ideas, and those who believe in the ideas won’t stop if you burn the medium with which the idea is delivered. It only instigates hate against your particular beliefs. But then, I am a big believer in freedom of speech. I may not like your opinions, but I will defend to the death your right to have them.

Snugglebugmom:

Thank you for your kind response, but I am not the one who started this Thread.

I am a Protestant Christian.

I was trying to find out why RosaryCrusader advocated burning Protestant Bibles, calling them heresy.

My point was that the Revised Standard Version of the Bible was adopted by the Catholic Church, who then made only minor changes.

Now the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition is actually the Catholic recommended Bible, and has been reissued as The Ignatius Bible.

So, the Catholic Church could not have considered the RSV to be a heresy.

That does not mean that all Protestant Bibles are equal. There are some that even I would consider heretical. But, I would not burn them. I think comparing Bible translations can teach us many things, and can often expose the fallacies of some translations.

I have Catholic Bibles and refer to them often.

I share your belief in freedom of speech.

Anna

Anna,

You’re missing the point. What determines whether or not it’s fit for the toaster are:
  1. Has it been authorized by the Church?
  2. Does it contain any heretical renderings?
  3. Does it contain any heretical footnotes?
The fact that the Church had to make changes to the RSV to make it “acceptable” for Catholic use speaks volumes which was my point in bringing up. The RSV goes snap, crackle, pop. The RSV-CE - not so much although there are questionable renderings in it too which is why some Catholics don’t use it.

Wow, that’s a pretty emotional response there. Not even THE Church? So, if you lived in the time of the index you would ignore it? Or maybe you did live in the time of the index?

Does the Church still go around burning books? I must have missed this at the last meeting.

Return to Post #8 for the Church’s current position on reading “non-Catholic Bibles” taken from the Catholic Source Book. In simple outline form, The Catholic Source Book, which I have referenced in other posts has an outline of the history of Bible translations,

If the Catholic Church would go through the effort of preserving the works of ancient scholars, including books extolling the exploits of pagan gods, I don’t see it in the censorship or book burning business.

adstrinity–I do recognize that you are being facetiousness, but I am not sure if everybody on this thread is. As Vatican II rightly points out, the continued divisions among Christians are scandalous. Strife is a luxury we cannot afford.
