Can Jesus lie?

The arrogance that it takes to say this is not even realized by those that say it.
No, it is truth. Either Jesus is God or He is not. If He is God (as the Catholic Church professes) then all other religions are false. If He is not God then Christianity is false. It is either or.

What you are saying is pure relativism or subjectivism. You want to say that all religions are true and equally lead to God. That can not be maintained within a Christian conception simply because Jesus is God.

Not true. The church does not agree with this. People of all faiths can get to heaven. If this is true than every priest I have ever asked about the subject lied to me (at least 10 over my lifetime).
Either those priests are refering to those who did not know Christ, nor had an opportunity to know Christ, or those priests are heretics, or the Catholic Church has indeed fallen far.

Can Jesus lie?
IMHO, no.

But people (or groups thereof) can lie about what Jesus said. I think it was Jeremiah that stated that God has a particular condemnation for those who say “God says…” when God said no such thing. Whether such is a person, a denomination or whatever.

.

The notes in a Study Bible I have goes against what you are trying to push here.

The verse you are using, John 14:6 is not seen to be exclusive. It is directed at a particular faith community and not a statement about other religions.

As I have said, we can only take this as directed to us. We know Christ and for us He is the only way. For those who do not know Christ we rely on the Mercy of God.
It is exclusive, but it is addressed to the community at the same time. The only way to God is through Christ no matter who you are or what religion you belong to, but we can hope in the mercy of God. Grace always comes through Christ, even if someone is apart from the Church.

Is someone suggesting that Jesus was arrogant when He said He is the only way to God?
The reason arrogance is considered a vice by Christians is because we are nothing compared to God. Jesus was God and thus could be as arrogant as he wanted. You’re right though, if Jesus were a simple man it would have indeed been arrogant.

So God can’t lie and what He says is 100% true. How come some people here are suggesting that some Catholics believe/teach that people can get to God in other ways? When Jesus clearly says He is the only way to God, either He is the only way or He isn’t. Otherwise people are saying Jesus is lying, God can’t lie.

All other religions like Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc can’t get a person to God?
How can they, when they deny Him? Islam, for example, denies the divinity of Christ and that the crucifixion happened as it did - they therefore deny the Son of the Trinity (denying therefore the fullness of God) and the very thing that brought about our salvation.

“Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” [Acts 17:29-31]
The arrogance that it takes to say this is not even realized by those that say it.
Actually, the opinion seems to be fairly scriptural.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6]

“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” [Matthew 10:32-33]

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…” [John 14:9]

“Whoever hates me hates my Father also.” [John 15:23]

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. [1 John 4:2-3]

Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. [Galatians 2:16]

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. [1 Corinthians 15:22]

Unless, of course, you wish to make the case that our Lord, His most beloved disciple and St. Paul were all arrogant.

He who rejects the Spirit rejects the Son, and he who rejects the Son rejects the Father. [St. Basil the Great, *On the Holy Spirit, 27]

Modern universalism affecting those who do not truly understand their faith well enough and are dwelling too deep in the ways of the world.

I am a believing and practicing Christian – Catholic to be exactly!!! 🙂
I have to say, it’s VERY sad, intolerant and radical to say that other religions and ways to god are false! 😦

Because they are wrong. The Catholic teaching is that Christ is the only way to salvation, and every attempt to speak of salvation outside the Church must be reconciled with that fact. There have been attempts by Catholic theologians to speak of salvation outside of the Church but they base their arguments on the presupposition that Christ is the only way. Some recent Catholic theologians have tried to speak of salvation of those who are not Christian with the presupposition of the universal love of God as well as that of the centrality of Christ. If they are to remain orthodox then they must hold to this fact.

Those other people are wrong then.

So why are you Catholic if you don’t agree with God, He is the one that made the rule that there is no other way but through Christ and all other ways are false. Christianity is a very exclusive Religion

Your God said it. You can choose whether you want to believe what makes you feel good, or what Christ said.

These options are mutually exclusive, you can not have it both ways.

And no, it is not intolerant to say someones views are wrong. That’s political correctness run amok, and it is quite anti-Christian. Christ himself told people they were wrong in their views.

If you want to believe there are many ways to God outside of Christ, that’s fine (it would be intolerant of me to say you are not allowed to do that), however know that you are at odds with the official teachings of your Church on that, i.e. you are in error according to your own confession.

Firstly, Catholics do not believe in Sola Scriptura, and Secondly it does not make sense to take one line of scripture and interpret it.
5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:5-7
The Catechism was also quoted above stating the Church’s position, that YES it is possible for people to go to heaven if they do not KNOW Christ. “The plan for salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day” CC 841

This is what the Catholic Church believes, so this is what I believe.

John 14:6 “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
I know the passage. I am suggesting that the gospel of John was written well after all the other gospels, was not written by the apostle John, and obviously had an agenda to it and wasn’t historical.

It is a question of truth. Either Jesus is God or He isn’t. Buddhism sees Jesus as simply an enlightened man. Islam sees Jesus as simply one prophet among many. Christianity professes Jesus to be God made man. If Buddhism and Islam reject the divinity of Jesus then there is a conflict between Christianity and them that can’t be ignored. Consequently, only one of them can be true. Either Christianity is true and the others are false, or Christianity is false and they others might possibly be true.

Jesus answered, **I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 14:6There you are straight from Christ Himself

Others what to think every way they want to God is right. God says this about that

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Proverbs 14:12
