Can Jesus lie?

I know the passage. I am suggesting that the gospel of John was written well after all the other gospels, was not written by the apostle John, and obviously had an agenda to it and wasn’t historical.
 Then you are not a Christian if you think His written word is corrupt.

Furthermore, what of the passages in the writings of Matthew and Paul? Or do you also believe those come after the “other gospels,” weren’t written by their authors, and “had an agenda”?

We can suggest that everyone has an agenda, but if we are going to have faith then we must accept what we are given. We don’t discover truth by starting with nothing and then constructing what we think to be true. We start with certain givens which we accept. The scriptures are given for the Christian faith and are to be accepted. Catholicism professes the inspiration of the whole of the scriptures, including the Gospel of John.

The fact is that the Catholic Church accepts the Gospel of John, whether you do or don’t. Check out the council of Trent, Vatican I and Vatican II. Whether you accept the verse as being from the mouth of Jesus is irrelevant because the Church accepts it as from the mouth of Jesus. The scriptures don’t exist to be deconstructed and voted upon.

I am a believing and practicing Christian – Catholic to be exactly!!! 🙂
I have to say, it’s VERY sad, intolerant and radical to say that other religions and ways to god are false! 😦

Michael
Nonetheless true. Unless you want to say “all roads lead to Rome”, absolutely no pun intended, and say that all religions lead to God.
There is only one way - Christ. Any worship that is not of and through Christ is idolatry, and false.

Paul never met Jesus and I don’t really trust that the gospels are completely accurate. I have not studied this enough, but I think that the gospels were partially based on Paul’s theology that said that faith is the only way to get to heaven and they implanted that into the gospels as quotes from Jesus. Hey, you never know, maybe I will write my thesis on it.

All the gospels had an agenda, nor does it matter when it was written. However if you take that view am I correct in guessing that you are not Catholic?

With all due respect, you should study a subject before you pontificate on it to other people. Coming to Christians, claiming that Jesus never said something, and when they quote relevant sources simply dismissing it with, “Oh that wasn’t written by those guys,” without demonstration, then admitting you did not study the subject…well, that is arrogance.

Paul Certainly did met Christ

Then you are not a Christian and your ideas on what Christianity teaches must therefore be taken with the same value as any third party. Thus when someone asks for the Christian interpretation your voice is irrelevent.

Now we can see that the words of the priests you mentioned earlier really didn’t mean anything, nor does the question of the place of Christ. The big issue for you is your own arrogance; your own opinion that you can determine which scriptures are true and which are not. You seem to think that you can determine which verses actually came from the mouth of Jesus and which are acceptable. All on the basis of your own opinion.

Just to repost some verses cited earlier, which are relevant to this discussion.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6]

“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” [Matthew 10:32-33]

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…” [John 14:9]

“Whoever hates me hates my Father also.” [John 15:23]

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. [1 John 4:2-3]

Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. [Galatians 2:16]

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. [1 Corinthians 15:22]

Paul did meet Christ on the road to Damascus, and Christ changed his life. 👍 After that encounter, Paul determined to preach Christ and Him crucified as the only way of salvation-- which does not conflict, in any way, with Christ’s own teaching that “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me.”

The teaching of the Catholic Church, in the Catechism, is that if any non-Christians are saved, they are saved by Christ-- by Him and His mercy. However, their salvation is not something that we should assume– thus, the need for evangelization.

Because they are wrong. The Catholic teaching is that Christ is the only way to salvation, and every attempt to speak of salvation outside the Church must be reconciled with that fact. There have been attempts by Catholic theologians to speak of salvation outside of the Church but they base their arguments on the presupposition that Christ is the only way. Some recent Catholic theologians have tried to speak of salvation of those who are not Christian with the presupposition of the universal love of God as well as that of the centrality of Christ. If they are to remain orthodox then they must hold to this fact.
Conflicting ideas in the Catholic church as to whether Jesus is the only way? Maybe some people will change the official teaching of the Catholic church to include all religions?

How much do you actually know about the Catholic Church and what the Church claims to be? No one can change the official teaching of the Church, in matters of faith and morals.

Is there other ways to God?

How many people here believe that there are many ways to God?

What is the Catholic churches position on this issue?

I hope Jesus can’t lie. If He lied, He’s not worthy of worship.

Only one way to God, Jesus the Messiah by His Blood.

I’m not sure, but I think the CC agrees with me.

And what, pray tell, do you base that assumption on? Your own say-so?

There can be no change. The faith is not up for democratic vote as you and prettylarge may think. The fact remains that Christ is the only way. We hope for salvation of others but there is no gaurantee. That is the way it is.

Have you got the authority in the Catholic church to say there can be no change?

Can Jesus lie?

Revelation 21:8 “…all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Maybe it will be the pope and then you will have to believe it, or else you would be going against the church and committing a mortal sin.

…except the pope. He is infallible, and what he says goes.
