Can Jesus lie?

And what, pray tell, do you base that assumption on? Your own say-so?
As of now, yes. But I will look into it. If I am clearly wrong, obviously I will admit it. If not, maybe I will write my thesis on it.

Have you got the authority in the Catholic church to say there can be no change?
I don’t need it because the authority in the Catholic Church is established upon an unchanging reality. God doesn’t change therefore the faith of the Church can not change. It was established by Christ and therefore it must maintain the faith it recieved from Christ.

…except the pope. He is infallible, and what he says goes.
No the Pope is not, that is a misnomer. The Pope is only infallible under certain conditions:
According to the teaching of the First Vatican Council and Catholic tradition, the conditions required for ex cathedra teaching are as follows:
  1. “the Roman Pontiff”
  2. “speaks ex cathedra” (“that is, when in the discharge of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, and by virtue of his supreme apostolic authority….”)
  3. “he defines”
  4. “that a doctrine concerning faith or morals”
  5. “must be held by the whole Church” (Pastor Aeternus, chap. 4)

and there are proviso’s
An infallible teaching by a pope or ecumenical council can contradict previous Church teachings, as long as they were not themselves taught infallibly. In this case, the previous fallible teachings are immediately made void. Of course, an infallible teaching cannot contradict a previous infallible teaching, including the infallible teachings of the Holy Bible or Holy Tradition.
So no the Pope are the Magisterium can never ever say there are more than one way to God because it contradicts the Holy Bible.

So there’s never been any changes in the Catholic churches teaching and you have no authority to say there won’t be further changes.

I believe Jesus when He says He is the only way to God but I’ve learned here that the members of the Catholic church disagree on whether Jesus is the only way to God. Seems like many want to open the door for people of other religions to be able to get to God via their religion.

It is irrelevant what people here say, Catholicism and Christianity in general is not an individualist religion in which each person determines what he wants to believe. We are to accept the faith of our fathers, the faith that has been handed down. Dogma can’t change whether some people want it to or not. No one, not even the pope can change it because it is a reflection of an eternal and immutible reality. The revelation of God in Christ was absolute, so there can be no change from that revelation.

What happens on these forums is simply a discussion of faith, it is not actually working out the truth or changing it.

There’s a woman at my church (a local Orthodox church) that follows the Charismatic understanding of “being under the Holy Spirit,” which is incompatible with the Orthodox understanding. She’s a convert, and she seems unwilling to forsake some of her former beliefs. A pity, really, however, her opinion is not canon.

Why would she even go to an Orthodox Church. In my experience most people with that sort of thing are bored by liturgies. After the exoticism wares off, what’s left for her?

I think she’s a classic example of someone who thinks they can mix both worlds. She probably likes the organization of Orthodoxy or a liturgical worship. Who knows?

All I know is she seems to quote “The Shack” more than the Bible. 🤷

Even I, who’s not RC, knows that the RC church does not claim papal infallibility in ALL things, but only when he speaks “ex cathedra”
Furthermore, not even the pope can “change” RC teaching. He can settle disputes on discussed topics, that’s it.

These are the teachings of the RC chuch…

So…you expect us to believe you when you say that the Gospels are Pauline constructions, only because you say so, and might write a thesis on it?
:rotfl:

The Catholic Church teaches that if anyone is saved, it is Jesus that saves him/her.

However, the Church does not say that a person who has had no chance to hear about Jesus will definitely go to Hell. No one can be saved without Christ. That is true. Therefore, if any person who does not know Christ is saved, the Church teaches that the salvation does not come through the practicing of Islam or Buddhism or Hinduism, or by being a “nice” person by any human standards. If a person who does not know Christ is saved, that person is saved by Christ.

We cannot assume that that salvation will happen though. That is not a safe presumption to make, and it does not honor God. We must preach the Gospel to those who do not know Christ. We are commanded to by God, and we should do it, out of love for Him and others and out of obedience to Him. That is the teaching of the Catholic Church–period.

Great reply! Exactly what I was trying to say but in a much clear manner.

I hope you do not mind if I use this in the future.

First, only two faiths were revealed by God: Judaism and Christianity. Any other religion is not from God. Now, that does not mean that they are demonic or that they do not contain some level of Truth. What is does mean is that they are NOT the proper way God taught man to worship him. Further, Religions are mutually exclusive. It is not possible that both Christianity and Islam are correct. Hinduism and Judaism, likewise, cannot both be correct. Therefore, it is impossible that ALL faiths are ways to God.

Second, as pointed out, those who have no way of knowing of Christ are not damned. As stated so well by others, the Mercy of God can extend to them. We are told that the work of Christ was sufficient to save all of the World. That means that anyone who makes it to heaven did so because of the work of Christ.

Is there other ways to God?

How many people here believe that there are many ways to God?

What is the Catholic churches position on this issue?
there are many ways to reach upwards to God.

there are many ways to imagine God, think of God, and try to get closer to Him. the major world religions tend to teach a combination of righteous works (good deeds), contemplation, and worshipful acts as ways to get closer to God.

but there is only One Way by which God has come down to us, in the flesh… through His Son. thus there is only one Way to know God personally, be reconciled to Him, forgiven, and made right with Him. not by trying hard to get close to God, but by understanding and trusting that God has already come close to us, as and through His Son, Jesus.

as nothing we do can reconcile us to God, we have only to trust Jesus by God’s grace, humble ourselves before Him, and ask Him to help us and save us. that is how we are reconciled to God, by faith by grace. Jesus died to redeem us from our sins, to make eternal life possible for us, and to raise us up to life too, through His death and resurrection. once in Christ and alive in Him, Jesus expects us to follow Him, live for Him, and walk as a disciple.

so there are certainly many ways to reach upwards to God through works, ideas, or rituals, but only One Way by which God has come down, personally, to save us. if we do not have the Son, we do not truly have or know the Father, however deeply we believe in One God and try to do good works.

Conflicting ideas in the Catholic church as to whether Jesus is the only way? Maybe some people will change the official teaching of the Catholic church to include all religions?
The Catholic teaching on this subject is correct; the Book of Mormon agrees: 😃

Mosiah 3:

11 For behold, and also his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have fallen by the transgression of Adam, who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned.

12 But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he rebelleth against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ.

D&C 137:

7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God;

8 Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom;

9 For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts.
