I am discerning a vocation to the lay Dominicans, and have been doing extensive research on the topic. My question is, if I join the lay Dominicans, am I able to wear the habit if I want to, or do I have to be in the first order to do that?

I know a lay Dominican who has a habit and wears it sometimes around the house (where she cannot be seen by anyone else). Kosher?

I can’t say. But it’s more likely to be kosher than wearing it in public.

Please ask your superiors. In some Third Orders and Public Associations of the Faithful, wearing a modified habit is allowed after a form of perpetual vows/promises is taken. That is a journey that takes a few years.

There was a thread, last year, I believe, in which someone asked if there were clothing or vestments that would identify them as members if a 3rd order, IIRC. The upshot was that to wear vestments, they must be vested or similar.

Sometimes, due to all of the bible Christians in our community, I would like to be, um, “provocative” as to my physical appearance. But, outside of wearing black slacks and shirt, there is not all that much I can do that is both psychologically and canonically sound.

So, I wear Catholic T-shirts.

Sorry, I just saw this. For some reason, I didn’t receive an email.

In short, yes, but only inside where others cannot see you (“no public assemblies”). One can wear it to Mass only if the bishop gives permission.

If evangelizing, I would suggest a simple Dominican cross or shield pin. Or a ball cap.

There are large scapulars being given out at one stage of formation, but I’m not sure what stage that is.

Blessings,
