Much of what Jesus taught was of this nature. He taught on hell and there is not much in Scripture on it. He was the final and fullest revelation of the Father.

The difference is that the Lord Jesus had perfect knowledge and was the God-man. He was incapable of erring. Fallen men are not and the Scriptures warn of false teachers coming into the church to decieve. This is why we must always test all teachings with the written Word of God.
Bingo. And who did Jesus tell us to stay away from? It sure was not the Apostles was it. Now how can you agree that the Apostles had the power given to them from Jesus, Every power that Jesus himself had, When he said what my Father has given me I now give to you. How can you deny them this power to pass on the same way that Jesus did then. Now we have a problem either Jesus lied or indeed this power has been passed on. You can not have it both ways. Now either the Apostles had the power of the Holy Spirit or they did not. Now if they did, they had the power to pass it on. If they did not have the power to pass it on, then they never had it at all. and Jesus lied to us. Now what will it be here.

What “power” are you referring to here specifically? What specifically is the “power of the Holy Spirit”?

Jesus had already been gone for many, many years when the Apostles met at Jerusalem in Acts 15. (St. Paul had already returned from his 7 year sojourn into the desert.)They certainly weren’t relying on Jesus coming in person to tell them what to say or do. If there was ever a time to rely on Bible alone, that would have been it - but they didn’t!
At this time they know what the contents of the gospels were. Jesus had already lived His life, taught and rose again. They had all this knowledge via there expierence with them. We would call something like “oral Scripture”. They also had the OT Scriptures to work with also. The point is they were never without Scripture be it written or oral. This situation is no longer true today. There is no more “oral Scripture” so to speak since the apostles are no longer with us.

There is no new general revelation, that is true. But the Apostles’ preaching (or “oral scriptures” as you put it) can never be forgotten because God’s word can never be forgotten. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever,” Is. 40:8. Nor can God’s word return to Him empty. “…so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I intend, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it,” Is. 55:11. The Holy Spirit serves as the living memory of the Church. “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you,” John 14:26.

Isn’t “oral Scripture” just another word for Holy Tradition?

Oh my, you are kidding right. If you are serious please go to john 16: 13-16. And just for the record the adovocate is the Spirit of Truth = Holy Spirit.

I don’t know. All we have today are the written Scriptures. The “oral Scriptures” no longer exist unless we now call them the written Scriptures. Correct?

Wanted to make sure i understand you. How was it manifested in the Apostles?

You might want to hit acts 13 . To be honest you may want to just read all of the acts. and again you may want to read john 17 12-16 again. It tells you exactly how they received the power of the Holy Spirit. actually read all of John from chapter 16 on.

If you don’t see it justasking keep reading until you do. It really is in there. But it would do no good for me to tell you, you must find it yourself. I know by now that all you will do is argue with me, and that will do none of us any good. So happy reading and hopefully it can be revealed to you.

Do you believe everything a council has said throughout history has been of Christ?
No, I would never suggest that.

Not every council is an Ecumenical Council – just as not every papal statement is an ex cathedra statement (or, if you prefer, just as not every letter written in the first century is part of the New Testament).

I have said this all of my life and will till the day God calls me home. I pray that you are not making fun of it justasking4. I would hate to see anyone making fun of anyone no matter what Religion they are for going to the Mother of Christ for Prayers. I have many sins in my life but would not want to face God with that one.
rinnie,

I agree with this criticize, but I think if you take a good, honest look around CAF you’ll see that there’s lots of Protestants making fun of Catholics and Catholics making fun of Protestants.

Incorrect. We still possess the Apostlolic Tradition (the preaching of Christ and the Apostles). The Apostles’ preaching wasn’t lost to the ages – it was preserved in the Catholic Church. This is made possible by the Holy Spirit, Who serves as the living memory of the Church. “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you,” John 14:26.

Hey, JustAsking4The100thTime,:tiphat:

Wow, I am sorry guys, :imsorry: It looks like I owe you an apology. :sad_bye:

I was only joking when I said the Monks were writing down our Sacred Oral Tradition thereby making it into Sacred Written Tradition. :yup: I thought you would understand that we would never write down our Oral Tradition.

Don’t you know that “others” would then distort it and use it against us? :sad_yes: Look what happened with the Holy Scriptures! :bible1: We can never be too careful anymore.

I hope that clear it up for you. I wouldn’t want you spreading false beliefs:rolleyes:
I hope I am forgiven:D

Hi Pete,:tiphat:

rinnie, is more than correct. Can you name one Catholic making fun of Jesus, Mary, The Holy Spirit or real truth seeking Protestants who ask serious questions looking for answers?🤷 I think not. I can name a dozen Protestants who are constantly making fun of Jesus, Mary, The Holy Spirit or Catholics who are helping real truth seeking Protestants who ask serious questions.:yup: There is a difference Pete! :sad_yes:

I think that most of what you perceive as Protestants making fun of Catholics and Catholics making fun of Protestants is christians joking around with each other.:dancing: Jokes, even weak ones like “My mom doesn’t believe in fabric softener … but she’s not around! Ha ha ha ha!” - Milhouse Van Houten (Simpsons episode CABF08) raise a smile when read and makes the person seem approachable .
However, a funner joke is having JA4 say “What is my false understanding? The way to determine if i’m speaking the truth or not is compare it to the Scriptures. If it can be shown i’m teaching something contrary to the Scriptures then i’m speaking falsely.”

It cracks me up every time they tell that one:extrahappy: !
God Bless

I agree Peter J, But there has to be a place to draw the line, And I think making fun of people for praying to the Mother of Christ is it. I can take alot, but not someone ANYONE making fun if of us for praying and asking the Blessed Mother for prayers. Maybe its just me, but thats a sore spot. I can take argumements why we do to prove why we believe or don’t but taking that prayer and doing that, really did me in. There is no excuse for that.

Remember that some non-Catholics simply don’t realize that Catholics see Mary as our own mother. They don’t understand that critiquing a prayer to Mary is no different from critiquing someone’s Mother’s Day card to their biological mother.
