So the beliefs of the church are not dogma? What is Catholic “dogma” then?

If the pope was infallible, then morality constantly changes, because popes are contradicting past popes.
before you post anymore, you really do need a “refresher” course in Catholicism.

catholic.com/library/Papal_Infallibility.asp
newadvent.org/cathen/07790a.htm

Notice they both talk about how most doctrines of the church have not been contested, therefore most things have not really changed. A pope can not contradict another pope, because that would like the truth contradicting the truth.

Yes, PL, you’re a young man and I’m sure you’re probably much more used to study than some of us oldsters who haven’t been in high school or college (well, not full-time anyway) for a while. You’re absorbing a lot of stuff from the Internet and Wiki and the latest shrill best sellers, and the problem is that you don’t have the foundation of really and thoroughly knowing Catholicism itself. (hint: Even if you had 12 years of education with terrific teachers --I certainly did–)you can’t be sure that you really understood your teaching, especially if with every new ‘new age’ piece of garbage you find yourself suddenly getting totally unglued and going 'what if." As an adult Catholic it is my responsibility to keep on reviewing what I know so that I have a firm foundation that isn’t going to go ‘what if’ because I’ve already studied all the 'what if’s and know where they go ‘wrong’ and how Catholicism ‘stays right.’

Now you need to build that foundation or you’re just going to keep flying six ways from Sunday (literally) trying to harness all the red herrings and the lies and distortions that are bouncing around you.

Did you know that the Buddha was an atheist?

If the Buddha is right, then their is no God.

If the Buddha was wrong…well logically we can not infer.

How is that illogical? I have taken logic classes so I am pretty sure my logic is sound.
Buddha believed that there were gods, and that you could be reincarnated as a God. But he did not believe in Brahman or a Christian God. But, just because Buddhists can fly does not mean that there is no God. For his path to enlightenment to work, it does not matter if there is a God or not. His teachings aren’t based on atheism, they are based on the world here and now.

“Buddha, however, was not an atheist in the sense that he denied the existence of the gods. To him the gods were living realities. In his alleged sayings, as in the Buddhist scriptures generally, the gods are often mentioned, and always with respect.”

6 of one, half-dozen of the other. Did buddha believe in the Devil, in an evil deceiver so to speak? That is what my argument is based on.
Buddhists have been known to fly. There is just as much evidence of that than there is of Jesus resurrecting. If you say that the devil made them fly, maybe the devil appeared to the apostles as Jesus. Same reasoning right there…as in it is based on nothing
Not quite the same. The devil (maybe through possession) making someone fly and the devil pretending to be God, teaching in His name, dying and resurrecting is not only implausible but impossible.
  1. Buddha is right, and some can fly.
  2. Therefore there is no devil
  3. If no devil, how can he possess Jesus?
  4. Jesus was really God
  5. Therefore the devil does exist
  6. Therefore the devil could try and deceive people with different religions as Buddha
This is all based on logic. Christians can use this logic because Buddha excludes the existence of the devil

prettylarge, these questions of yours are getting out of control. The original post was about whether someone could be saved if they changed religions. Now you are talking about Buddhists flying to prove they are one of many correct religions.

You can have this belief if you want, but if you truly believe this, then why are you trying to convince other people?

I mean, you say I could be right with Catholicism. That Buddhists could be right or Protestants. So if a Catholic comes to this forum and asks a question (expecting a Catholic answer) why are you challenging the Catholic answers they receive? I mean, by your own logic, Catholicism is as good as any, so just let us be.

If you have questions about Catholicism, then by all means ask, but please do not try to lead other Catholics astray.

The Buddha was tempted by “Mara” who is a demon and similar to the devil. But I have heard that Mara is in fact in all of us and not actually a demon. Kind of like a counter to conscience. That is kind of how I see the Christian devil anyway, although that obviously isn’t the common interpretation.

Wikipedia has a good article on Mara:

I didn’t say that Buddhists flying proves that Buddhism is correct. I merely stated that historically there is as much evidence as Buddhists flying as for the resurrection of Christ. Also, you don’t need to BE God to perform miracles. The apostles were attributed with miracles, right? So just because he was resurrected doesn’t mean he was God. Otherwise all the apostles would be God as well. Unless resurrection is some sort of special miracle only God can do.

I read your other post and clearly my knowledge of Buddha is lacking :o So if Buddha believed in an evil being, then my arguments do not hold water.

Maybe I need to do more research, but I have found the evidence for Jesus to be overwhelmingly superior to any other religion. Obviously different things appeal to different people even at different times. I went through a kind of “peace, love, hippy” phase. I thought native americans and their beliefs that we are part of nature and should respect it, “Mother Earth” kind of thing.

Then I realized, everyone can’t be right. Or if everyone is right, then everyone is wrong 😉

I am pretty sure that resurrection is a pretty fantastic miracle if you will. Other religions may claim it, but it seems to me that the actions of the apostles prove it; namely they died preaching about Jesus.

I don’t have a problem with this at all. I understand that you can definitely come to this conclusion through logical thinking and through exploring your spirit. But it isn’t a fact like gravity and can also be debated through logical thinking and exploring your spirit (think muslims).

i dont know if my view has been previously presented, but ill state it anyways. if she truly loves God and only wants to do His will, and she has come to this descision, then i would think she’ll be fine if she follows what they (her new Church) say. it will be more difficult without the Sacraments, but this does state it will be impossible.

James 1:17 “Pure and undefiled Religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unstained by the world”

pray for her and make sure this person doesn’t fall into sin or away from God. prayers do not go unanswered

But if the Catholic Church is the one true Church and she knows this, then she is committing a mortal sin.

Does her new church celebrate the Eucharist? Do they believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist?

I suppose if she was not properly educated on Catholic beliefs then maybe she does not have Full Knowledge so she would not be committing a mortal sin. Only God knows what is in her heart. I agree though, pray for her.
