After reading more of the thread- I have to offer to you my deepest respect and support. I know that many of us have had to defend our positions to others, and you have maintained a level of christian civility that makes me proud to call each of you who have defended the faith, “brother” (and sister of course!).

I guess in some cases people’s hearts are hardened to the truth, and though their intentions seem sincere- they miss the forest for the trees so to speak.

I do not think you will be able to convince him of anything at this time, but I will pray for him. On the other hand, I don’t think you should feel that any of your efforts are falling on deaf ears. Who knows how many lurkers or posters at the site have been moved by your words, and more importantly- by your example of civility and character. You might have even given others the confidence to defend Catholicism more effectively and compassionately to family, friends, and co-workers.

I know you have done that for me.

Wow… I don’t know what to say…
Thanks for that kind words 🙂

Anyway, what frustrates me the most is the fact that I’m defending the Faith from a Catholic! He claimed he’s a Catholic yet he attacked Our Blessed Mother with the severity of a Baptist… And oh, how I LOVE our Blessed Mother. How hurt must she feel treated like that by her own son in the Church…

Why spend time at a place that is headed up with an ad for porn?

*You are all fair, O Mary,
and the original stain is not in you.
You are the glory of Jerusalem,
You are the joy of Israel,
You are the honor of our people,
You are the Advocate of sinners!
O Mary, Mary,
Virgin most pure,
Mother most merciful;
Pray for us,
Intercede for us with Our Lord Jesus Christ

Tony D…i’m glad that you learned from my indeavors there. that alone is encouragement to continue.

cmom…good call. sometimes my mind gets caught up w/ complex arguments and i forget the obvious ones.

i think i’m gonna stay a little while longer. i think i’m making progress b/c my opponent gradually has less and less new things to say about the topic, and he really hasn’t refuted any of my arguments.

–although–jason engwer jumped aboard (probably b/c of this catholic.com board) which freaks me out a little b/c he’s a veteran protestant apologist and i’m like 2 years strong! oh well, i’m gonna do my best.

ur continued support and comments are encouraged, and if anyone wants to hop in this debate and help me out, PLEASE feel free.

thanks,
phatcatholic

What is the general atmosphere like on all sides: relaxed ? friendly ? hostile ? tense ? “other” ?

Jason Engwer certainly seems to know his stuff 🙂 ##

I would say . . . hostile. I’m an Anglican and have posted there several times since first discovering this thread. I’ve taken a stance which sometimes rejects some of the worst attacks against Roman Catholicism while indicating I am NOT Catholic. They don’t like my ‘moderate’ stance any better than an out-and-out Catholic one. Not at all. Phatcatholic is posting to a thread entitled “Mean, wicked, vile, and nasty Catholic teachings”, if this give you any hint of the attitude. Fr. Ambrose and the other Orthodox visitors here would be delighted to know that my attempts to distinguish between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy were dismissed as “more cult stuff”, for another example.

These folks are hard-line fundamentalists, and not especially good examples of fundamentalism. They have a spell-check system on that board, but most of the members seem disinclined to use it, for instance. I checked out their website, and they’re proud to describe how they recently were permitted a booth at a county fair in which they denounced Roman Catholicism in some pretty tasteless ways. Many of them seem to have deep-seated personal issues with Catholicism, as with the person whose Catholic wife allegedly left him because she got too wrapped-up in the Medjugore visions. Totally uninterested in the ‘other side’ for the most part, and prepared to believe pretty much any canard against Catholicism and to reject out-of-hand any defense of it. The Catholic Answers board gives Protestants far more of a fair hearing than The Truth: Former Catholics for Christ e-board gives to Catholics.

I don’t question their sincerity nor their salvation, but am doubtful that this is a particularly fruitful field into which to sow seed. My guess is that there are Protestant message boards intended to respond to Roman Catholicism whose members are much more reasonable. This is a particularly virulent group.

The way they all gang up on catholicism reminds me of a group of really popular girls in grade school who were always picking on me. Guess some people never leave that mindset. They are so nasty! They don’t want to debate they want to gossip and make fun.😦

phat the phenomenal! Excellent work. When you are not engaging in apologetics, are you available for lectures/presentations/workshops on Marian devotion? PM me.
