Can someone who rejects the Gospel be saved?

Definition of know

(3) : to recognize the nature of : [DISCERN]
So… if a person hears, but does not discern, then he does not know. And therefore, he is not condemned for his lack of knowledge. QED.
you went farther, and said they would have to “accept as the truth” first.
If he does not ‘know’, then he clearly cannot ‘accept’. Fundamental logic, brother. One does not accept what he does not know. 😉

You keep talking about standards, where is that in the Bible?
It is in the Apostolic Teaching of the Magisterium of the Church. Catholics aren’t “Bible-only Christians”.
Where is that in Church teaching? No where.
I’ve spent much time in this thread demonstrating where that is, and the only reply I’m seeing is “but… it’s not in the Bible!” Oh, the leaven of Luther is rife in the world!
It is easier to believe those who choose to reject the Gospel are saved rather than reach out to them, evangelize them, pray for them, do penance for them…
No – and ya’ll keep setting up this same tired old straw man! YES, we must reach out, evangelize, pray, and do penance! But – and this is the critical point – we cannot presume condemnation where the Church does not teach that it is present!

So… if a person hears, but does not discern, then he does not know. And therefore, he is not condemned for his lack of knowledge. QED.
I thought we were sticking to the Church interpretation. The Church uses “know” to describe “hear” in Scripture.
If he does not ‘know’, then he clearly cannot ‘accept’. Fundamental logic, brother. One does not accept what he does not know. 😉
That’s false. To hear, and have capacity to understand is being aware and knowing something related to you. Then, you can accept or reject after having knowledge.

You claim one has to “accept as truth” before rejecting in order to be condemned. That is farther than Scripture and Church Teaching goes.

It is in the Apostolic Teaching of the Magisterium of the Church.
Where in the Apostolic teaching of the Catholc Church does it say, those who reject the Gospel after having come to know it have a different standard of salvation? Where are those words?
Catholics aren’t “Bible-only Christians”

True but we are Bible Christians and we do believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. We do not believe this of every document from the Vatican.
I’ve spent much time in this thread demonstrating where that is
I have not seen anything that says, those can be saved who reject the Gospel truths after having come to hear and know it. I will agree that the Church teaches those with invincible ignorance can be saved but not those who have come to know the Gospel and then reject it.
we cannot presume condemnation where the Church does not teach that it is present!
We also can not presume salvation where the Church does not teach that it is present.

Matthew 13

“Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path."

Mark 4

“The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.”

Luke 8

“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones on the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

It is a matter of the Word penetrating the heart.

Jesus says even if we dont understand, it was still sown in the heart! Because the Gospel speaks to the heart primarily.

NAB-RE
1.) Those who never accept the word of the kingdom…

You are the one saying one has to “accept it as truth” not me. Jesus said the devil takes what was sown In the heart and it was never accepted. These reject the Gospel. They reject it without understanding. Because they are not seeking God. If they were seeking God, and open to His grace, they would accept it, and keep it.

I think it is hard for some to accept that people can be condemned because we know that God is so merciful and loving but that is usually because there is a forgetting or not wanting to think about the fact that He is also just and judges us not only on His mercy but also on whether we accept that mercy and obey Him or not.

God gave us free will and we make the choice every day whether or not to accept His mercy and based on that free will decision we are either condemned or not.

There’s a difference between “accepting that people can be condemned” and over-enthusiastically determining who will be condemned… 😉
I would certainly agree that “accepting that people can be condemned” and “discerning what constitutes disbelief in the Gospel, which condemns” can be distinct.

I dont appreciate the insult, however, in your demonizing MagdalenaRita’s search of Scripture and Church Teaching as “over-enthusiastic” or attempting to “determine” as if she decides.

Scripture is clear, and multi-passage supported, while the Church has used the word “know” to individual’s privileged with the Gospel, and also responsible to turn from condemnation.

Watering this truth down for your own belief does not make you more merciful. It could mean you dont understand the weight and worth of the Gospel being related to a soul.

The Church Teaching regarding those who may attain salvation who are outside, formally and visibly, who have not heard the Gospel, is under the condition that they are seeking God and receiving the grace which has been given then to do His will.

So if one has heard the Gospel message, and they are seeking God, and receiving His grace, they will not disbelieve the Gospel message. For this is the very heart of God, penetrating the very heart of one seeking God. This is the message of God’s most Holy Grace.

I dont appreciate the insult, however
It wasn’t meant as an insult. Rather, it seems that ya’ll see “condemnation” a whole lot more often than the Church does. Does that “demonize” folks? Of course not. We’re not talking about whether ya’ll are good people or not – we’re just talking about whether the Church’s teachings are being reflected accurately.

If it offends you that some folks disagree with your personal interpretations of Scripture and Church teaching, well… 🤷‍♂️
Watering this truth down for your own belief
Why, I’m offended at this demonization of me! 🤣 😉

The main problem, is that you are not addressing Scripture at all. You are simply referring to a couple Church documents and applying your condition of “receiving as the truth” to the one word “know” used by the Church.

You have connected zero dots between those Church (brief) passages, and Scripture.

If you find something in one of the books which you claim connect some dots, well produce it.
Why, I’m offended at this demonization of me! 🤣 😉
Your obvious inability to produce sound support for your “accept as the truth” theology means something.

Umm… because Church documents exist in a void, and are apart from Scriptural principles? 🤔

Agreed. I’m thinking that – since these passages are the teaching of the Church herself! – they don’t conflict with Scripture. Would you presume otherwise?

Maybe it means that we’re spending too much time being personally offended, and not enough time listening to what the Church is teaching us… 😉

So, no one has done that. The Church, which includes the Word of God, Tradition and the Magisterium has always taught that belief in Christ and baptism were necessary for salvation, there is no added exception outside of invincible ignorance. The very document you linked bears that out very clearly.

Now the Church has said that we do not know on an individual basis who is condemmned and who is not. That judgment is for God alone. We can not know when someone dies if they are in a state of grace or not or if God granted them final repentance or not but no where does the Church teach that it is okay to not believe in Christ.

That is where the difference is.
Rather, it seems that ya’ll see “condemnation” a whole lot more often than the Church does.
As I said above, the Church only sees what causes condemnation, not who or where it is happening. That judgment is for God alone.

There is no “seeing where” condemnation is but rather “seeing what” causes one to be condemned.
disagree with your personal interpretations of Scripture and Church teaching, well…
Are you sure you are not personally interpreting Scripture and Church teaching? You have not shown one Bible verse or Church teaching that says anywhere, those who choose to not belief in Christ shall be or can be saved.

I have not seen one proof of that. I’m sorry but you are just reading things in to Church documents that are NOT there. No where!
Rather than assume people who do not believe in Christ are or were saved, it would be better to pray for them that before they died they turned to Christ in final repentance.

🤔
I dont appreciate the insult, however, in your demonizing MagdalenaRita’s
Thank you.

I certainly dont. That’s why I provided Scripture (even with Catholic footnotes) and demonstrated how the two harmonize. It’s not the Church Teaching we disagree with, but what it means. And we shouldnt insert a phrase of “receive as the truth” for the word “Know”.

I think it’s time to move onto the Church Fathers. I’ll see what I can find.

Perhaps you should look a bit more diligently. What do you think that Lumen gentium is talking about, in its paragraphs regarding non-Christians? Are you really gonna suggest that it’s talking about Jews, Muslims, and others, in the context of “oh, they’re just godless, bound-for-damnation sinners”?!? 😦

Like I said… it seems that ya’ll are anxious to find condemnation where the Church doesn’t teach it. 🤷‍♂️

Scripture clearly Teaches it. You attempt to apply conditions NOT related by Scripture, or Church Teaching.

Okay, so it has been said over and over again, that is talking about those who because of invincible ignorance, though seeking God, could be saved.

It does not say they will be saved or that salvation exists for them where they are but that it is possible somehow by the mercy of God they could be saved because of the Church.

There is no salvation outside the Catholic church still stands.

So, I hope you realize that every human being is a bound for damnation sinner without Christ and the Church and baptism.

There is no salvation outside the Catholic church still stands.

Again, rejecting Christ after having heard the Gospel truth puts one’s soul in grave danger.

As someone who once rejected the Church, trust me I am sooooo much more grateful to the persons who prayed and did penance for me than those who said, oh she’s okay where she is, because I wasn’t.

Yeah. I hate when conciliar and magisterial documents of the Church fail to actually assert Church Teaching.

Actually… that’s exactly what it says! I’m sad that you are unable to read it in the way it was written and intended. 🤷‍♂️

“Extra ecclesiam nulla salus” does not mean “people outside the Church are not saved.” The Church has proclaimed this over and again. Not enough, apparently, but that’s what she teaches.
Again, rejecting Christ after having heard the Gospel truth puts one’s soul in grave danger.
Again… no: ‘hearing’ isn’t the standard that the Church proposes.
As someone who once rejected the Church, trust me I am sooooo much more grateful to the persons who prayed and did penance for me
Me too.

However, that doesn’t mean that you would’ve necessarily been bound for hell if you didn’t. Maybe, maybe not. And not – as ya’ll assert – “definitely”. I’ll pray that you come to an understanding of the mercy of God for His people. All His people.

Again… no: ‘hearing’ isn’t the standard that the Church proposes.
This is false. “Hearing” is the term given by Scripture. The Church uses the term “know”, which must, therefore, be considered synonymous, in this context.

Except that you haven’t provided any infallible magisterial documents that say you can reject Christ and be saved. No where.
I’m sad that you are unable to read it in the way it was written and intended.
So, as I said over and over, that is not talking about those who reject Christ after knowing the Gospel truth and sorry but IMHO you are reading things into the document that are not there.

Not only that it is not an infallible magisterial document but a pastoral document,

You just continue to twist Church teaching around and say just enough without really addressing the question fully.
‘hearing’ isn’t the standard that the Church proposes.
Again twisting words. You will notice I have said several times, heard the Gospel truth, not part of it, not some of it but the fullness of truth found only in the Catholic church and Jesus said to preach or tell the Gospel to the whole world. If someone preaches or tells you something, usually you hear it.
understand… the mercy of God for His people. All His people.
I understand that God does have mercy for all people and wants no man to be lost but He also gave all people free will to accept that mercy or not.
Me too.

However, that doesn’t mean that you would’ve necessarily been bound for hell if you didn’t. Maybe, maybe not
Yes, maybe or maybe not?

It is your choice but you go ahead and take a chance on it with your soul and those of others but I will not follow or heed your misguided advice. I will pray for you also.

God bless, I believe I will mute this thread and stick with Church teaching.

📿

My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee.
