Can veganism be pleasing to God?

Beef is meat from a herbivores.

Pigs are scavengers and are therefore unfit for human consumption.
If you don’t want to eat pork, fine. However, Catholics are allowed to eat it if they so choose.

The “worms” argument is still horrible, so I’m still also unsure how them being scavengers automatically makes them less suitable for consumption.

God created pigs to be scavengers; God did not create pigs for human consumption.

We are given descriptions in Genesis in the Bible of the animals we are to eat.

We are told in Mark 7:19 that Jesus declared all meat clean, and that seems to be corroborated by Peter’s vision in Acts 10:9-16.

In all fairness, in my home country, pork is basically eat at your own risk. The American pig farmers have done a good job at ensuring a safe product, but not all areas of the world have done that. That being said, when I visit my family back home, Carnitas and ribs in adobo sauce are two of the first things I hope to eat.

Do you eat human meat. All meat is not clean.
  1. That doesn’t actually address either passage, since humans are not treated as food in Scripture.
  2. The fact that you put humans on the same level as animals is really telling of bad theology.

It is absolutely pleasing to God. Just because one CAN eat animals does not mean one SHOULD, especially in this day and age of factory farming and inhumane slaughter…an industry that that has mechanized cruelty, cares little for workers, and destroys the environment. God asks us to be stewards of the Earth, and instead we exercise a brutal, uncaring dominion.

Veganism is a rejection of violence and cruelty. It requires a deep compassion for the powerless. It respects the body, God’s temple. I’m just not sure what kind of moral/philosophical calisthenics it would take to find fault with such a lifestyle. Though I know I still have a long way to go, I try to be consistently pro-life.

OP, you might appreciate Matthew Scully’s book Dominion.

God tells us through scripture that He does not give us the right to eat unclean meat. Watch the videos and you will see.

Yeah, I’m not saying that there aren’t places where it is bad to eat for health reasons. There are also preparations of certain meats that are risky, such as how eating poorly prepared beef or chicken can be hazardous. I also don’t take issues with personal preference. I just take issues with attempts to moralize against eating meat or certain meat universally.

So you’re just going to ignore the passages where He tells us that it is clean?

That’s how I see it as well. I’m a lacto-vegetarian, but here in the UK milk production is switching more and more to factory farms with cows always indoors. This thread has given me some impetus to try again to at least reduce milk/cheese consumption (with cheese especially it is hard to know how the cows were kept).

I also never felt more healthy than when I was vegan. My weight was just right, and I had loads of energy. I just craved cheese too much!! The spirit was willing but the flesh was weak 🙂

Since you clearly have no read the above two passages, here’s the two passages I cited earlier with some added emphasis:

Mark 7:19:
since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
Acts 10:9-16:
[Peter] saw heaven opened and something resembling a large sheet coming down, lowered to the ground by its four corners. In it were all the earth’s four-legged animals and reptiles and the birds of the sky. A voice said to him, “Get up, Peter. Slaughter and eat.” But Peter said, “Certainly not, sir. For never have I eaten anything profane and unclean.” The voice spoke to him again, a second time, “What God has made clean, you are not to call profane.” This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into the sky.
I’m not saying to eat unclean meat. I am saying that it is not unclean to begin with. To declare otherwise is clearly in violation of Scripture.

For those who may be interested in why people may choose veganism…

God does not consider unclean meat to be food for humans.

Leviticus 20:25
[25] Therefore do you also separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the clean fowl from the unclean: defile not your souls with beasts, or birds, or any things that move on the earth, and which I have shewn you to be unclean.

Thank you. Well expressed. I don’t expect others to jump on the vegan wagon but I also don’t expect it to be discounted as unhealthy (which is absurd) nor unpleasing to God.
