Cause that’s what verse 21 says: “It would have been better for them not to have recognized the road to holiness than to have turned their backs on the holy law handed on to them, once they had known it.” New American Bible
My take on it is that anyone on the “road to holiness” would be be in the process of being saved, not saved, past tense. It goes well with my favorite OT verse:
This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look,
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is,
and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls."
Jeremiah 6:16
Good morning,
You have quoted one of my favorite prophets and one I used to use in catechism class to show my kids how one has to decide whom one will serve. It goes along with Deuteronomy 30:15, and in another scripture in Deuteronomy is states almost exactly what Jeremiah says, but I can’t think of it right now and don’ want to make a mistake like in my first post! Thought you might be interested since you like Jeremiah so much.
Also, I don’t like to carry on about things that are not important but I DO think the 2 Peter 2:20 quote is important only because it directly answers the OP question of salvation being lost. So I’ll not belabor the point but would like to say the following:
2 Peter 2:19-22 is speaking of teachers; however, we are all held to the same standard so it is okay to use as a proof text.
If you read 2:20 carefully you’ll see:
"For if after they have escaped the defilement of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ"
So now they have escaped the world - they had not been saved before but became saved, or being saved, as you like to say (and correctly so) by the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
"They are again entangled in them and are OVERCOME, the last state is worse than the first."
They are now entangled again in the world and have lost their salvation.
So: They were lost, they became saved through Jesus, they became lost again.
And the last state is worse than the first (the second time they became lost is worse than the first time they were originally lost) because if you remember Jesus said, To whom much is given, much will be required.
So they had know the Lord and knew the right things, so their going back into the world and being lost AGAIN was worse then when they were originally lost.
Now, we might be saying the same thing but using different words which is many times the case. So I would apologize if this is the case and I didn’t understand you.
I only think it’s important for the OP to understand that you CAN lose your salvation.
God bless you
