I met a man (online) who is amazing - extremely devout Catholic, sweet, thoughtful, kind, funny, smart…

We talked for several months for HOURS every day - on the phone, via chat, text, even video chat.

Finally met in person and I felt no chemistry 😦 I’m so disappointed and am wondering if that is something I can pray for. Can I pray for God to give me attraction and chemistry toward someone? Can I pray for God to make me fall in love with him?

Does anyone have experience with someone where you felt no attraction or chemistry initially, but then eventually it came because you prayed for it?

Can you? Sure.

Should you? Another matter entirely.

Talk to your priest for guidance on vocational discernment.

Are you suggesting that because I did not feel attracted to him, I should be a nun? That seems a bit ridiculous. I can’t imagine what else you’d mean by “vocational discernment” other than implying that I’ve wrongly discerned my calling to be married - which I can assure you, I have not.

Marriage is also a vocation.

It happens – yes. The online chemistry is false intimacy and the reality is that that same chemistry or intimacy is not there.

I would not pray to love someone that I feel no chemistry for. I don’t think it’s advisable to pray in this fashion. You can pray for God to send you an appropriate partner if that’s His will – but I would not pray to make this person “the one.” Maybe God has a better person in mind for you, rather than forcing the issue of the one you do know.

Good luck; God Bless.

That would be disappointing.

You CAN pray for that, certainly. But I don’t believe it’s right. Personally, the furthest I would go is asking God to bless or fill the relationship. Put the situation in His hands. Let Him lead you 🙂

If you find your feelings change, then sure, that’s excellent. But if love does not grow for this person, then accept that God has a wonderful plan for you that He will reveal in time. Listen out for what He is saying, and try to follow His will 🙂

God bless, and good luck.

Why would you want such a thing?

Instead of focusing on your desire to be with this man, why not pray for Christ to bring you closer to Him and show you more ways you can serve Him and those around you? If Christ is first in your life (and I’m certainly not presuming that He isn’t) then everything else falls into place in it’s own time and you shouldn’t worry about it 👍

Based on what I understand of Church teaching, God will not make a specific person fall in love with you, any more than He would make any of us all fall in love with Him.

**That’s because God allows free will in all His sentient creatures. We must freely choose to love Him, be angel and Human. Likewise, a person that loves you and appreciates you must do so freely, without coercion. Any other possibility is a recipe for disaster.

I concur with other responses: Talk to your priest, but also ask God to help you in companionship and guidance in discerning if you are called to the vocation of marriage (otherwise, dating has little point) or if He has another plan for you. God bless.

Why would you want such a thing?
I agree with this. Wouldn’t you rather wait until you have genuine feelings for someone? Let’s say God grants your prayer, you’re going to wake up every morning knowing that the only reason you feel for him is because you prayed for those feelings, not because they’re what you already feel inside.

Lots of times, people can captivate us by what they say online, but when we meet them in person, we find that they’re unpleasant, or we just don’t “click” with them as well as we thought, that’s normal.

Why would you want to throw away your free will like that?

Thank you for the replies 🙂

I think it’s reading into my question a bit too much to suggest I want to “throw away my free will”. I don’t want to do that. I’m simply wondering if I have some sort of worldly impediment to not “falling” for him. False expectations, past sin, not being totally open-minded…these things which could cause me to pass over this amazing man based on superficial or “this world” ideals.

I wouldn’t be praying for God to MAKE ME fall in love with him, rather to make sure that I’m not judging him based on appearance or holding him to an impossible standard of perfection. Praying for God to open my heart, perhaps, would have been a better way to word it.

And I am glad to hear about those who didn’t feel “sparks” initially with their significant other…but that those feelings came later. I’m hopeful that is what will happen with us (if it is God’s will for us to be together, of course)

Personally, I wouldn’t dare to ask such thing to God. Instead, I would pray for the man God has for me (even though I don’t know who this man is), to take care of him, to guard him and lead him to the right path.

You didn’t really say how many times you have seen each other in person or how many hours you have spent together etc., I think that the time you spend together will let you either fall in love or not(chemistry), lots of that comes from knowing someone personally. Knowing their personality. Most couples don’t meet and fall in love instantly. Knowing someone online is not the same as really knowing them. I also think that to really know him you need to spend lots of time together, get to know his family etc. You need to see the good, bad and the ugly. It is easy to hide the bad and ugly when your relationship/friendship is online or long distance!!

Don’t give up he may be the one!!😉

Yes I agree 🙂 And we have only spent a total of 3 days in person together…so I’m definitely not giving up 🙂

Just remember that on the Internet people aren’t being themselves, their Internet personality is a projection of how they feel but may not ever act in real life.

Don’t try to love that person you spoke to on the Internet, in a way, he isn’t real.

I totally understand where the OP is coming from.
Good Christian men don’t grow on the trees. So if you finally meet one you would like things to work out.

I prayed too once to fall in love with someone like the one you describe. Today I see very clearly why God did not grant me my wish… it would have been a disaster.

Trust God…

YES exactly. Even on the “Catholic” singles sites you find a plethora of men who claim to be Catholic, yet believe contraception or premarital sex is no big deal. Once you weed through the “Catholics” to find the REAL Catholics, then further weed out the ones who are 20+ years your elder…it leaves not much more than a handful of men.

So yes, it would be wonderful if I could develop stronger feelings for this man, and I think I will pray for that (“God if it is Your will, help my feelings to increase for this man you have placed in my life”)

Stuff like this can easily lead to infatuation with someone you don’t truly know.

Reality check on this person that you don’t really know. Have you spoken to this person about how they may feel about you after having met in person? Perhaps he feels the exact same way, just because YOU may want it to be a certain way does not mean that it is or ever will be that way.

Funny that a topic like this pops up as I’ve been talking to many people lately about the phenomenon that is the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl/Guy.” Google search that term and I think you’ll find that what you think about your man is something you’ve conjure up in your own mind.

I have never found anyone through the online thing…but would like to know what the deal is with making age such a factor. I know four couples who are 15, 20, and 30 yrs apart (2 are 20 yrs apart) and they have great marriages. After a certain point, age should not matter, it’s maturity. I am, by geneology, in the generation of those 20 yrs older, if I limited my friends to my age group, I’d have NONE. I have acquaintences my age, but we do not like to do the same things at all when it comes to activities and outlook on life. I try hard, but the fact of the matter is I think like the 50 yr olds, not the 30 yr olds–my likes, dislikes, experiences, music…going all the way back to when I was a kid and we’d go on a field trip—I would be talking to the parents, not my classmates because the parents would discuss the event. If the only reason “he” has to not want me is age—that is shallow, two people can be the exact same age and have totally different life experiences because one is rich, the other poor, one from the city and the other from the country. I just don’t think it’s right to make age a deciding factor if you’re both over 25. I also don’t think you should say “oh, I’m 45, it’s too late” because I know people who have married for the first time in their 50’s. God is not limited by age, in fact, going by Abraham and Sarah, Moses, Zachariah and Elizabeth----I think God doesn’t really care about age so much as what is inside us and what His plan is for us.

Sorry, that’s my opinion. I don’t particularly like the idea of judging someone on age…seriously, doesn’t that sound a bit shallow: “You’re a great person, faithful to the church, I love spending time with you, we talk about so many things and you are so much fun to be with…but you’re not the right age.” Ok, or hair colour or weight or height???

And to the topic—I have mixed feelings. I have always prayed for God to guide my feelings and let me know when Mr. Right showed up so that I would not be confused, I am sure He can direct me in this, if I ask for guidence in a job or other things, why not love and marriage? However, praying for someone to fall in love with you? No, I don’t think that is really right. Maybe just try to be friends, to build the relationship from there. As others have said, make sure you know the real him!
