The last paragraph of the article reads (emphasis added):

“‘I think Canada is ready for this kind of discussion, to start looking at the limits of religious freedom,’ she said. ‘When certain religious beliefs call for the suppression of human rights, that’s when we have a problem. We currently have that problem in Catholic schools here in Ontario, as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Even in British Columbia, which has private Catholic schools. We will have to address all private religious schools as well, eventually.’”

Truly chilling. Early Soviet leaders must have said similar things.

If she wants to see freedom of speech banned in schools, what about churches or Christian media?

Public opinion is very much against the Catholic Church is this issue. Not that this should sway the Bishop’s stance but it does mean that the outcome of this issue was a forgone conclusion.

For the life of me I can’t understand why someone would go to a Catholic School if they don’t want to receive a Catholic education. Going to a Catholic school and demanding that they support homosexuality seems equivalent to me going to a public school and demanding that they teach Catholic doctrine.

I think that Ontario Catholic schools should emphasize sexual morality in their curriculum. Homosexuality does not need to be mentioned by name, but by simply explaining God’s plan for sex (procreation and unity) the message will be delivered.

Of course homosexuality needs to be mentioned by name. As one of the prevailing sins of the times, the issue should be brought up long enough to be refuted and condemned. I don’t think any comprehensive sexual education course rooted in Catholic values should shy away from explaining disordered and evil sexual practices such as masturbation, adultery, contraception, abortion and homosexuality, because these are very real issues that teenagers will be confronted with in the real world.

Certainly there is much to be said for a positive approach as you suggest: procreation and unity are the underlying natures of permitted sexual practices. Much can be said about the goodness and holiness of the marital act within the context of marriage, and nobody should be teaching falsehoods such as sex being a necessary evil, or sex being only for procreation to the exclusion of bringing a couple together. But immorality can be denounced in a definitive and non-judgemental way so that children come to know right from wrong.

It’s a sad fact that many Catholics just don’t care. The even sadder thing is that catechesis, which now was put in the parents’ hands, is often just not happening. The parents are the product of 9 or 12 years of Catholic education that taught them very little and they are totally incapable of transmitting the Faith to their children, they don’t know the basics of it and they aren’t interested in learning. So for now, we get kids coming to us for preparation for First Communion who may not have been in church since they were baptized, who don’t know the basic three prayers and in some instances don’t even know the sign of the cross. But their parents bring them for this ‘rite of passage’ (rather than ‘sacrament’), we give them 6 sessions of preparation, they make their First Communion and we don’t see 50% of them again.

Our best and, for a long time, only catechist was the Catholic woman who taught in the Inter-denominational school system and whose children attended the school where she taught. When she first came here, she had to teach catechism to her own kids to prepare them for the sacraments so she volunteered to prepare the children of other parents whose children were going to the non-Catholic schools (due mainly to language). She continued doing so for 14 years. But unlike in the US, here there is no requirement that anyone be trained to be a catechist. You volunteer, you’re a catechist. Few volunteer and, of those that do, fewer still are capable of ‘transmitting the Faith’ since they don’t know it.
wow, thats pretty accurate to my experience in catholic grade school and high scool, I’ve never even held ,let alone read the catechism before. Outside of a few sunday school clases as a kid when I was going through the sacrements and those high school religion classes I Really didn’t / don’t know all that much about catholicism. It was only recently now in college at age 21 with some renewed interest in the faith that I learned how to pray the rosary. I ran into a couple people who I knew from high school, we started having a conversation and one them mentioned faith, they were/are under the impression that the church is against evolution and these were people who had gone to a catholic high school( some of whom had gone to the same high school as me). So yes it would seem that , at least in parts of ontario, there is a disconnect between catholic school and catholicism.

… better off closing the school IMO.
That was the red button the Catholic Bishops over here were quite ready to press when Government wanted full compliance with mandate on sex education in our schools, which were all contrary to Catholic teachings.

If things continue on the way they are going on this issue there will be worse on the way…
