Archbishop: “some people to trust allegations on websites more than they trust the bishops”

TORONTO, June 22, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Archbishop James Weisgerber, the President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), has claimed that there is “no evidence” of abortion involvement on the part of groups funded by the bishops’ official development arm, the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (D&P). The remarks were made in response to questions about the results of a recent investigation into five of D&P’s Mexican partners, which LifeSiteNews.com (LSN) had reported in early March were involved in abortion advocacy.

Weisberger indicated in an interview with a local Catholic TV station that the report, which has been released to select bishops, and will not be made public for two or three more weeks, states that D&P is not involved in funding pro-abortion groups. “The delegation found that there was no foundation to these allegations,” he said. “We can assure you that none of the money was spent to promote abortion, nor for support of abortion with the funds of Development and Peace.”

The archbishop made his statements in support of D&P despite a recent letter from the family commission of the Peruvian Bishops Conference, in which the Peruvian bishops formally requested the Canadian Bishops to stop funding three pro-abortion groups in their country. LSN has also documented evidence – including interviews and photographs - that over 20 of D&P’s partners around the world are involved in abortion and/or contraception advocacy (read all the evidence here).

No foundation… the bleepin’ websites of this organizations they were funding with OUR money were full of pro-abortion rhetoric.

The bishops of Peru wrote to the canadian bishops to ask them to stop funding pro-abortion groups in Peru.

I’m tempted to start sending my weekly donation to a parish in Peru instead of a parish under the Canadian Bishops. How frustrating and disillusioning.

This claim by the Archbishop is outrageous. Archbishop Weisgerber and all Canadian Catholics are in dire need of prayers right now. It’s unclear to me what is happening in the hierarchy here, but it is scary. I think the souls of millions are in great danger here.

I think Archbishop Weisgerber should be punished accordingly. He has insulted faithful Catholics everywhere.

Let’s not get carried away here. Nobody’s souls are going to be in danger if people act firmly and prudently.

I too am very disappointed at my Canadian Bishops. I have never written to a bishop but I want to. Does anyone have any suggestions ie. tips on how one would even begin such a letter?

I want to tell them that while it is understandable that D&P made a mistake by not checking to see if the activities of their partners conflicted with Catholic doctrine, it is unacceptable for them to continue doing so. A separate matter is the way this has been handled. I don’t appreciate them not taking responsibility for their actions. I can imagine D&P and the CCCB wishing to maintain the dignity and integrity of the organization as it has done a lot of good all over the world. The best way they can maintain their credibility is to accept responsibility for their negligence and make amends and carry on. Anything less would be scandalous and simply unacceptable.
 
This is why I cannot stand these “Social Justice” groups. They have no idea what these people truly need to improve their economic condition. These people need free trade, open markets, microlending, and encouraging small business. Instead, they act like lobbying groups and transfer checks from the government and donors to mostly non-Catholic groups where they have no idea what they are doing with the money. It is getting to the point where I almost want to call it outright theft by these organizations. This is social injustice.

I normally would trust a bishop too, but I went to the websites of the organizations that were receiving D&P funding, and their pro-abortion advocacy was there in black and white on the website.

The bishop came right out and said that it’s okay to give money to a group that promotes abortion, as long as the money you give doesn’t go to the abortion-promoting programs.

While he may technically be correct that its not a sin to do that in certain situations (like when its the only way to help the poor), it simply makes no sense that the Catholic church has to or should want to do that. Why don’t they set an example and use their money to promote groups who are genuinely catholic? It’s a slap in the face to people in the Church who work for pro-life.
 
Now the Bishops of Peru are complaining about D+P funding 3 groups there promoting abortion.Read about it today in the Catholic Register.Calling my Bishop’s office tomorrow to complain.

Archbishop Weisgerber is pushing the rest of the Canadian Bishops to brush the scandal under the carpet and not bother looking closely at evidence. He has even ridiculed the Peruvian Bishops for complaining about the financing of abortion-advocacy groups in Peru by Development & Peace. I strongly suggest that in addition to phoning your Bishop, you also send him an email with the link to the following powerful video expose on the D&P scandal: youtube.com/watch?v=RsBkAc8Shng. Henderrob, I agree with the general principle of testing all things and not automatically accepting things you read on the web.

However, the LifeSiteNews stories are backed up by tape recorded interviews with represenatatives of D&P partners, in which the representatives admit that they support the “right to abortion” and condom-distribution. One partner in Mexico even admits they helped a girl try to obtain an abortion! The LifeSite articles provide links to pro-abortion UN documents signed by these partners, and to their own websites where you can read for yourself their pro-abortion positions. Besides, LifeSiteNews is not some little blog nobody’s ever heard of. They’re the leading pro-life news service in the world and I think they’ve been around for a 10 years or so. I’ve been following their news for about 4 years myself.

So in effect here we have respected Archbishop James Weisgerber, essentially making reference accusation to the fact that Life Site News is speaking lies.
I don’t see enough transparent facts and evidence presented by Archbishop James Weisgerber or the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to prove beyond a doubt that such funds from (“Development and Peace Lenten Folders”) are not supporting Abortions including the purchase of millions of condoms. I for one will not support D and P Lenten Folders as will a number of other Archdioceses in Canadian provinces in Lent 2010.

Have read the full article from Life Site News I can’t say I’m totally surprised by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops reactions and their flawed decisions to continue supporting Development and Peace Lenten Folders with multi-millions in funds going to Mexico, Latin America, and areas around Peru in South America for the provocation and support of Abortion and Condom Contraceptives.
Anyone who is familiar with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (“Winnipeg Statement”) shouldn’t find it difficult to understand what provokes the sinful actions of the C.C.C.B. when 98% of the Canadian Bishops withdrew their support and virtually threw out any thing having to do with Pope Paul IV’s encyclical on (“Humane Vitae”). The Sanctity of Human Life
