Canadian bishops' report: Mexican aid partners 'imprudent' but not pro-abortion [CNA]

Ottawa, Canada, Jun 30, 2009 / 05:39 pm (CNA).- An investigating committee with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has released its report concerning allegations a CCCB-affiliated agency was supporting pro-abortion groups in Mexico concluding that the charges were unfounded but deeming the groups in question to be “imprudent.”

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) was accused of distributing funds to five organizations that support the legalization of abortion and the distribution of contraceptives in Mexico.

The CCCB’s Committee of Inquiry made a visit to Mexico in April after which it rejected the allegations that Development and Peace projects there provided financial assistance to projects related to the promotion of abortion.

There are many more accusations of groups all over the global south who are pro-abortion and have been getting money from D&P. This investigation wasn’t even honest about what the real accusations were - the the groups are pro-abortion. Not that the money was eartagged for pro-abortion projects.

It’s very disheartening to see them trying to cover these problems up like that

It will be interesting to see if Diocesan Bishops, in Toronto, Vancouver, and other places, release funds to this outfit. To me, it is just too high risk, too Marxian and not Catholic enough of an outfit, when there’s lots of other truly Catholic enterprises that can use my contributions to help people in need.

I hope too many Bishops don’t make themselves look bad over this.

What ever happened to admitting your mistakes, apologizing, then fixing them? Isn’t that the Christian way?

Or would admitting a mistake be detraction? Does Catholic morality actually require us to sweep things under the carpet, to avoid the sin of detraction? Is that why the bishops hid the sexual abuse scandals and now this? Just wondering.

Detraction is the unjust damaging of another’s good name by the revelation of some fault or crime of which that other is really guilty or at any rate is seriously believed to be guilty by the defamer.

Calls for a “Thorough Review” and “Profound Renewal” of Development and Peace

TORONTO, July 22, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a two-page statement issued today, Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins has released his long-awaited decision regarding funding of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (D&P). For 2009, says the statement, “We will set aside $1,125,000, which will be available for projects of Development and Peace which are operated by organizations endorsed by local bishops.” The measure will serve to clear up the problems with such funding since none of the pro-abortion groups funded by D&P are known to be endorsed by their local bishops in the developing world.

After LifeSiteNews.com broke the story regarding evidence of D&P funding pro-abortion groups throughout Latin America, Asia and Africa, Archbishop Collins was the first bishop in the country to announce he was withholding funding pending investigation. “Development & Peace has not as yet received its funding from ShareLife for 2009. Be assured I will not allow any money raised in the Archdiocese of Toronto to be used for pro-abortion activities or organizations,” he said at the time.

In the current statement, Archbishop Collins also calls for a “thorough review” of D&P. “(I)n this coming year there needs to be a comprehensive review of the organization, including its mandate, its governance and organizational structure, its policies and protocols related to the funding of projects, and the instruments of communication linking Development and Peace and the Canadian bishops.”

Now THIS is Episcopal Leadership!

One has to ask: How ever did the organization get set up, in the first place, without the requirement that it act in concert with, and with reference to, the local Catholic Bishop? Hopefully, the statement will set a response pattern, and its recommendations will be followed, completely, and forthwith.
