Montreal Cardinal: "I am against abortion, but I can understand that in certain cases, there is almost no other choice than to practice it."

MONTREAL, April 14, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Over the Easter weekend, Le Devoir newspaper published a story based on an interview with Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte of Montreal, during which the Cardinal contradicted the teachings of Catholic Church on abortion and condoms.

In the interview Cardinal Turcotte, as quoted by Le Devoir, compared abortion to killing in self-defense, effectively equating the unborn child with a violent aggressor. “Personally, I am against murder,” he said, "but can understand that sometimes, when someone is being attacked, they need to kill someone in self-defense. I am against abortion, but I can understand that in certain cases, there is almost no other choice than to practice it."

You’d think we would be used to these pagans-in-Catholic-clothing by now but every day there is some new outrage.

Well, there goes Canada…
Doesn’t Quebec have one of the lowest birthrates in the world?

I agree with all the above posts; this is an absolute outrage. The philosophical Principle of the Unjust Aggressor does not apply to an unborn child because the child is totally innocent and helpless; hardy “unjust”. The cardinal is a very mistaken man if he thinks that an armed psycopath or a terrorist, and a child who’s only crime is to live, are morally the same thing. I’ll pray the Rosary tonight for the cardinal and I hope others will join me; let’s also follow that LifeSiteNews link to the Cardinal’s email address and warn him personally.

Hopefully the Holy See will lay the smackdown on this dissenters.

I would like to see the complete interview to see the context of these comments. You may recall that Cardinal Turcotte has made clear his commitment to life before :cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2008/09/11/mtl-turcotte0911.html?ref=rss

Le Devoir newspaper. Is that French for ‘AP’?

I find this story a little suspect…

Le Devoir is a French Language newspaper so it would be better to find out WHO did the translation - we’ve seen Vatican pronouncements SUFFER a lot in translation - even the Catechism wasn’t exempt from translation ERRORS.😦
Let us pray for the Cardinal and hope it won’t be too long before we get the TRUE story.

Self-defense doesn’t apply when the threatening party is innocent.

Otherwise it would have been alright for Dudley and Stephens to have cannibalized the cabin boy when they were stranded on the lifeboat. Which it wasn’t. This is Ethics 101.

One can sympathize with a woman who might ***feel ***that abortion is an act of self-defence, or defence of her other children. But to give an extreme example, Hitler undoubtedly felt that his extermination of the Jews was an act of self-defence, since he felt that Jews poisoned the social order.

If this is true this Cardinal should be banished to the attic of the vatican.I am a beleagured and set-upon Canadian Catholic who lives for and publicly demonstrates for the sanctity of life and suffers the usual slurs and public opprobrium and now this Judas plants his knife in my back and those who are faithful to the teachings of the Church.

Pope Paul VI referred to the smoke of Satan which has entered our Church. This is IT…among other things. Please don’t blame Canada for this MORON-blame Rome if they do not publicly censure him, repudiate his statements and force him to apologise. This statement,if true is appalling and MUST be condemned.

I am ashamed as a Catholic.

Quebec does have one of the lowest birthrates but now is a completely apostate province which used to be one of the most Catholic.

Canada itself has NO abortion law AT ALL.None.

The notorious abortionist "Doctor"Henry Morgantaler was recently awarded the now discredited Order of Canada for his “courageous service” to women.

So-called same -sex “marriage” is completely legal and celebrated.

Human Rights Commissions have been turned from shields into swords and are used to inhibit free speech and thought.

Canada “went” a long time ago and I fear that your country is right behind us if I have a proper read of the politics of the U.S.

I think you probably do have a proper read of U.S. politics & agree (sadly) with you that we are going down the same path unless something changes.
Canada is a beautiful place.Hope one day things get better for you all.

A Canadian…no wonder!

Whatever was said of that country is said enough. Anymore would just be wasting my time…and I’ve already wasted enough !

WHAT???

“Cardinal?” Turcotte, you are surely kidding!

**How can an innocent baby “attack” her own mother??? I would gladly die for any of my children and i am the world’s # 1 coward!!!
**

Every day i am shocked by the audacity of the arrogant who deny Jesus and His love for all people.

Pray for their conversion, pray for my conversion!!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

People now call good evil and evil good, and they do it every day.

Hopefully the Holy See will lay the smackdown on this dissenters.
This is what I’m hoping for, by wrestling the falsehoods and restoring the truth. This can’t stand… the shepherd is misleading Jesus’ sheep… he’s feeding them garbage instead of beautiful truth for nourishment.
