I would have never believed this story if I had not read it

The investigations refer to LifeSiteNews.com stories which have provided evidence that Development & Peace Lenten Folder collections with, the official development arm of the Canadian bishops conference, is funding groups that advocate for abortion. The original LifeSiteNews.com information only concerned groups in Mexico, but subsequent reports have found that such abortion advocacy groups in receipt of D&P funds throughout Latin America and Africa.

A petition has been started to ask the bishops to investigate. I noticed two priests signatures on it already:

gopetition.com/online/26452.html

I used to give this group a monthly donation by automatic bank withdrawal but I cancelled it when I heard this news. It’s so sad… I wanted to help the poor in the name of the Catholic Church but instead they did this. It just makes me so furious, I better shut up now before I say anything too uncharitable. :banghead:

We were advised at mass Sunday that all donations to Share Lent are being held in the diocesan office and will NOT be forwarded until this situation has been rectified. Our priest went even further by stating that ANY personal contribution that will be taken up next Sunday was ENTIRELY up to us.You don’t have to be a mind reader.

Okay, I am an American so I am in no position to influence this. I can only presume that this was NOT done deliberately. I have read articles and comments from several Canadian bishops who have publicly expressed strong objects to the Canadian abortion laws and who are clearly doing their best to protect the most defenseless Canadians.

I have every confidence that the Canadian bishops will get to the bottom of this and either stop the funding or explain what is really going on, whichever is appropriate.

Even so, my prayers are for the Church in Canada, which is far more oppressed than the Church in the USA. At least for now. :gopray:

This is a bit unnerving. I used to thing that by only giving to the Church the money was “safe” from being abused.

I too share your unnerving sentiments. I did by chance do some further research from previous years and found addition information that Lenten folder contributions for Development and Peace turned into thousands of dioceses from not only Canada but U.S. dioceses also in previous years where charitable funds were used from these coffers to purchase millions of condoms in hopes of slowing down the spread of HIV in extremely poor places in Africa and areas in Central America. I’m scratching my head trying to figure out why supposedly Catholic Organizations who go in to these destitute areas to assist the poor with food, clothing, shelter, and good drinking water. And are given the task of morally educating these people about abstinence to ward off HIV infection. So why should charitable catholic organizations distribute millions of condoms ? There has never been anything substantial from scientific testing that the use of condoms will shield people from contracting HIV from sexual relations. Where’s the moral justice in all this ?
I think that catholics who give in to supporting Catholic charitable organizations in using Lenten Folders deserve some responsible answer rather than seeing this money used for condoms or procuring abortions which has become evident now. I think the Bishop from the diocese of Peterborough Ontario, Canada is correct in with-holding all Lenten monies collected for Development and Peace until the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops research their resources and receive feedback as to how such monies are spent.

This blog has a public letter to the president of the Canadian Bishop’s Conference with more details about the pro-abortion groups they fund:

I corresponded with that bishop as well and he still encouraged me to support Development and Peace and said he would be supporting them. It’s a terrible problem.

Thanks for the Blog. I thought I was one of the few in my archdiocese that knew about this.
Having talked to my own parish priest he informed me that it was a terrible situation as you said. But also the existing problem is a very complicated one that can’t be simply prejudged from a superficial stand point. In reply I told him that nothing about this problem is superficial.
I have sent him an email about your Blog reference and am presently drafting a cordial letter to my archbishop with a number of validated references about how Development and Peace uses such monies from the CCCB. I suspect he is already aware. Perhaps his reluctance to inform the congregations in the archdiocese about this will create anger a upset. As you stated this really is a huge terrible problem.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of the bishops believe that its okay to work with these organizations that promote abortion, as long as we’re not directly funding their abortion campaigns. For example, there are groups that help women in legitimate ways, but also advocate for abortion rights. Certain bishops and D&P officials think it is okay to fund their good initiatives in spite of the bad ones.

Of course, many pro-life catholics disagree.

Today at mass they read a letter from our local Bishop which said that Development and Peace denies giving money to groups that provide abortion services.

That’s good, but no one ever accused Development and Peace of doing that. They were accused of giving money to groups that promote abortion and abortion “rights”. By not addressing the specific accusations, they are implicitly agreeing with the accusations, at least the way I see it.

I’m surprised this isn’t getting more attention here on CAF. Is it because its not an American problem? The thing is, this group is supported by a national Conference of Catholic Bishops - that should be shocking to any Catholic anywhere in the world.

The analogous US organization, Catholic Campaign For Human Development, did the same thing. There is no doubt that the “social justice” wing of the Catholic Church is more symapthetic to pro-abort groups than the wing of the Catholic Church that follows all of the Church’s teaching. Many social justice groups also feel a woman’s right to choose is a social justice issue.

Sadly, I believe your assessment is correct.

I had an interesting discussion on the forum last week about the wisdom of donating to causes that go thru the USCCB. One of them is the Human Development Campaign I believe. Your money can be going to groups such as ACORN and Industrial Area Foundation which I want absolutely no part of. I was shocked.

If you want to be sure that your money is going to be used according to Church teaching, then you can always give directly to the Vatican. The charity is known as Peter’s Pence:

Remember when the church said that we could no longer support Amnesty International because they decided to list abortion as a human right they would fight for?

But now this arm of the bishops is supporting groups that do exactly the same thing. It justt doesn’t make any sense. What a scandal.

I find it frightening though that the USCCB is the Catholic Church. You would have thought you wouldn’t have to be concerned about what they were doing with your money. The person that I was talking to said for certain things they will do directly to the charity such as the local food bank, homeless shelter, etc.

I looked at one of our envelopes with USCCB printed in a small line at the bottom and one of the listed things was legal fees for immigrants. I will not donate to that. I would bet you that it is illegal immigrants or no differentiation between legal and illegal. I will not give money to fight the laws of my own country or encourage illegal immigration. And before everyone jumps me, I would of course offer food or shelter, or medical aid to an immediate need.

If there was not yet enough information to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Development and Peace, the official international development arm of the Canadian Bishops Conference, is supporting pro- abortion groups, take a look at the recent news headlines from Life Site News. A group in East Timor funded by D&P has been battling the East Timor Bishops on legalizing abortion.

As LifeSiteNews has reported over the last month, the CCODP is funding numerous organizations that advocate the legalization of abortion in various countries, including five other such organizations in Mexico, three in Africa, two in Brazil, two in Haiti and one in Togo. In addition, the National Catholic Register has reported that a Bolivian organization supported by the CCODP is also pro-abortion.

LifeSiteNews is investigating other organizations funded by Development and Peace and will be reporting its findings in the days to come.

Many dioceses in Canada are caught short-winded this year with most of the Lenten collections handed over by the laity to Canadian Catholic Churches during the Holy Triduum this week. I only hope the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops reconsider their strategy and seriously consider where Lenten Monies are distributed in Lenten collection in 2010.
To me this is a grave moral error on behalf of our Bishops who are held accountable for this travesty promoting abortions in poor foreign countries. I for one will not support Lenten folders from Development and Peace after this Easter. Bishops need to get on the ball instead of dunking their heads in their soup. How does one define shame in this situation.
