His Holiness lacks intelligence? Benedict XVI is probably one of the most intelligent men who have ascended to the throne of St. Peter in many years (thats not a put-down to other Popes, I’m just saying that the Holy Father is quite an academic).

But he’s not LIBERAL, so therefore he’s not intelligent, according to liberals…

Oh, well…

In that case I guess I’m quite dumb. Like most other Catholics here. Poor dumb orthodox Catholics 😛

The Catholic scholar in the Macleans article wasn’t assessing Benedict’s IQ, he was giving his opinion that Benedict’s speech was a stupid move. I can’t say I’m very close to Higgins on most of his opinions as described in the article. But whether you agree or not, calling the speech “gross stupidity” is a fair criticism - albeit a little more blunt than Benedict might have offered, were their positions reversed. The greatest genius can still make stupid mistakes.

It’s true that even brilliant people can make stupid mistakes, but in this case I don’t think the brilliant Benedict XVI made a stupid mistake. I think the only stupidity was that of the people who leaped to conclusions and had their angry little outbursts before getting all the facts.

I would expect nothing less from Michael Higgins. I find his writing is often very anti-Catholic - he’s often in the Toronto Star. On another note I was very surprised at the Maclean’s article. It seemed more fair to the Holy Father than I would have expected from them. Then they had the article following the cover story by Father DeSousa which was excellent (I love his stuff in the National Post).

Yeah, he just want to live out his life in comfort. Don’t shake the ground he walks on…

It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t live in an Islamic world.

In a way, it is not entirely bad that erstwhile Catholics show their true colours. Yes, it’s a nuisance, and somewhat embarassing. But it also contributes to clarity.

To have any credibility and effect at all, the liberal (both small and large “l”) Catholics must appear to be practicing – or at least attempting to practice – the Catholic faith. When they are not, unfaithful utterances just highlight that fact, and lessen their ability to do harm.

Chesterton wrote about the Church appearing larger from the inside than from the outside, and noted that those who stand on the porch and grumble, rather than standing inside, also experience the smallness. These folks are much less harmful when seen for what they are – proch grumblers – than if they are taken to be practicing Catholics.

George Weigel gave a good example of how to something questionable (not that His Holiness’s speech was). Someone in the Curia once stated that if the (then) Holy Father said that 2+2=5, he would believe it. Mr. Weigle stated that, in public, he would confess that he could not discern the message in faith and morals that the pronbouncement contained, and in private,he would pray for the man’s sanity. I wonder how much praying Higgins is doing?

Blessings,

Gerry
