Hello!

I was wondering a couple of things. Namely, what should I do, if anything, about this experience (Should I tell my priest? Is there a way to tell him without looking like a crazy person?)? Also has anyone else had any similar experiences and what did you do in response?

Thanks!

Normally I’m pretty down to earth about this kind of thing and look for “natural” explanations to this kind of thing(I’m an engineer by trade if that adds credence to anything.) but I had a strange experience.

I have a little prayer area in my bedroom set up with some icons of saints I feel a connection with, a little statue of Our Lady, a bust of Christ, along with a crucifix. It helps me to meditate/focus on stuff while praying my morning and evening prayers. I also have a little candle that I light while I pray to sort of set the mood. The soft natural light helps with stuff.

I’ve never had an issue with this candle/brand of candle before while praying or any of the other things I will describe here.

This past Tuesday night, I was praying my nightly prayers as usual. Candle goes fine and everything is normal through my shorter prayers and night prayer from LoTH. When I get to the third mystery of the sorrowful mysteries though, it gets so cold in my room that I could see my breath, the candle dims and snuffs out.

I kept praying though and as soon as I finished the rest of the rosary, the candle appears to relight and my room warms back to normal temperature.

More than likely your house has a draft. I don’t see any reason to suspect otherwise.

Get your house blessed by your Parish Priest

Probably you got scared and could not properly see if the candle was out or just very tiny.
Anyway, since it was relighted why do you worry? Take it as a sign you under God’s protection for loving His mother so.

Houses have drafts.

Maybe someone opened a door or window that caused the draft in your room.

Remember, when we hear hoofbeats, think horses. It is not often going to be a pack of zebras.

Was this purely supernatural? We simply do not know. Since, at this point, anything is possible, and since they are always and everywhere useful, I would counsel you to get a booklet of Spiritual Warfare prayers from your local Catholic bookstore. There are times in life when one can sense the presence of evil. For these occasions, and for those which are unknown, such prayers can have great benefit. I speak from personal knowledge.

Talk to your priest, I heard a story (as best as I can remember) of some nuns who entered a room of their convent and found the chairs inexplicably overturned, they thought it might be of demonic origin, so they called the diocesan exorcist, and he discerned it to be Ghostly, instructing Mass to be said in the room every day for a month, that entire month each day at a certain point the candles would go out, the first time startling the priest and scaring him away initially, on the last Mass the candles remained lit the entire time, it was a sign of a soul in Purgatory requesting prayers. Your priest will hopefully know what to do or refer you to the Diocesan Exorcist.

If you think it is supernatural, do not get attached to it. Do not desire for it to happen again and do not let yourself be distracted and interrupt your prayers. Pray for discernment.
