Shea wrote an article that said Jerome defended the deuterocanonicals later in his life and gave a quote from Jerome to prove this. Ray showed Shea the error and Shea admitted he was wrong. Shea admitted he was wrong.
So, Shea apparently believes he was in error. It’s clear to me Shea was in error.
What do you think of Mark Shea admitting he was wrong?
I don’t know what he was wrong about except that he exaggerated when he said that Jerome strenuously defended the Deuterocanonicals. Jerome did not need to defend them, because they were already accepted by the churches as scripture. Ray did not provide evidence that Jerome included the Deuterocanicals grudgingly or that he never really bought into the idea that they should be part of the canon,so I don’t know why Mark is conceding those points. Jerome quotes from the Deuterocanonicals about 55 times as scripture, sometimes in the same context as quotes from canonical scriptures, and he referred to them as scripture.
