Can't get married outside?

I visited Ireland in 1971 and went to the parish where my great-grandparents were married, and asked the parish priest if they were in his records. He found their marriage, and when I asked if they had been married in the parish church, he answered that in those days (about 1855), marriages took place in the bride’s home. Baptisms and funerals were done in the church. The church itself was an old one, built in 1812, so it wasn’t a question of not having a church building, or of it being distant.

Well, no. Baptisms are generally done in Church but baptisms in other places are still valid…
Some protestants believe you should have running water, so they baptize outdoors.

I have seen baptisms in the Atlantic ocean (Florida), as well as in a small river next to the church (West Virginia).

When he was a boy, my grandfather broke his arm while watching baptisms in a river in Tennessee. He climbed onto a tree limb to watch, others joined, and he fell off the small end of the branch.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I find the Church’s position regarding this to be extremely arrogant. The Church is a man-made building. The Earth - according to their teachings - was created by God himself. The earth is his “house.” By establishing a position that a man-made structure is somehow superior to what God created goes against the Catholic teaching to be humble. Jesus was a poor man…he is depicted preaching OUTSIDE.

I find it interesting that back in the 1950’s my parents who were both Catholic, were not allowed to be married in a church. They weren’t even allowed to be married by the local priest. THey were sent to another town and parish and the ceremony was held in the rectory. Why? My Mom was expecting. I tell the story to illustrate once again that the “rules” change over time at the direction of people in power. WHERE a ceremony takes place really isn’t relevant as evidenced by the thousands of Catholic marriages which began in a Catholic church and have ended in divorce. My parents have been married 60 years.
