I visited Ireland in 1971 and went to the parish where my great-grandparents were married, and asked the parish priest if they were in his records. He found their marriage, and when I asked if they had been married in the parish church, he answered that in those days (about 1855), marriages took place in the bride’s home. Baptisms and funerals were done in the church. The church itself was an old one, built in 1812, so it wasn’t a question of not having a church building, or of it being distant.
