I’ve got a question. Say you commit a mortal sin, but can’t get to confession for another week (for genuine reasons, not that you just don’t want to go). What do you do? Thanks!

Priests will usually schedule appointments outside of regular confession times.

If that’s not a possibility, I would ask for the grace to be truly contrite. I would go to Mass on Sunday, but refrain from receiving Communion.

I forgot one of the most important parts. Oops.

See, one of my friends is a non-Catholic and we were talking about sin, and I was explaining venial/mortal and said (which I think is correct) that if you die with unconfessed mortal sin then you go to Hell. He asked me the question I just asked.

So what I’m really asking is, if you can’t get to confession and you have committed a mortal sin, but you plan on going as soon as you can, is their nothing you can do between then and now? If you die that’s it? I’ve heard some things about ‘perfect contrition’. If you have perfect contrition are you forgiven on the condition that you go to Confession asap? Thanks.

Pray to Jesus for forgiveness, then see the priest as soon as possible. In the meantime, however, it is best not to step in fromt of any MACK trucks…

Not correct.

Try:

See, one of my friends is a non-Catholic and we were talking about sin, and I was explaining venial/mortal and said (which I think is correct) that if you die UNREPENTENT with mortal sin then you go to Hell. He asked me the question I just asked.

If you had the opportuniy to go to Confession but passed it up, that might be a little different.

Ok, thanks everyone! Knew that I had to be getting something wrong.

But I’d imagine it’d always be wise to avoide stepping in front of a MACK truck…

We have a fair and just God. If the Lord knows that you are sincerely contrite for having offended Him, and that you plan to confess the sin at the next opportunity, then it is reasonable to not fear hell. But you should not receive the Eucharist until you have gone to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Say an Act of Perfect Contrition (you can do a google search to find the words) and resolve to confess your sins as soon as possible!

Should you then die without the opportunity to confess then God, being merciful, will take into account that you intended to do so and were genuinely contrite.

One of my friend from Auburn did that before but it took him a could of weeks until he finally got to go to confession:)
