At some point, if we don’t, we will defeat ourselves and destroy God’s church.

I thank God for men like Chuch Colson: a non-catholic Christian. The following is a transcript from his radio program BreakPoint.

Brouhaha in Boulder
A Tough Witness

March 19, 2010

Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Boulder, Colorado, recently informed the parents of two students that their children wouldn’t be re-admitted for next fall’s term.

Normally, that would be a matter between the parents and the school and not the stuff of national news. But not this time.

That’s because the parents in question are a lesbian couple.

Father Bill Breslin, the parish priest, explained that the decision was motivated by concern for the children’s well-being. According to Breslin, “If a child of gay parents comes to our school, and we teach that gay marriage is against the will of God, then the child will think that we are saying their parents are bad…We don’t want to put any child in that tough position.”

That prompted Breslin to ask an obvious question: “Why would good parents want their children to learn something they don’t believe in?” He noted that “there are so many schools in Boulder that see the meaning of sexuality in an entirely different way than the Catholic Church does. Why not send their children there?”

Not surprisingly, what’s best for the children isn’t what’s at stake for the Church’s critics. Students from Iliff School of Theology, a liberal Protestant institution, protested outside of the Archdiocese of Denver’s offices, holding up signs that read “Standing on the Side of Love.”

Please.

As Archbishop Charles Chaput, a formidable defender of orthodoxy, explains, Catholic schools “exist primarily to serve Catholic families with an education shaped by Catholic faith and moral formation.” So it’s reasonable, he says, to expect “school families to live their Catholic identity faithfully.”

Now, Catholic schools do accept students of other faiths and no faith. They accept children of single parents and divorced parents. But they also expect that these parents will not offer a “serious counter-witness” to Catholic teaching in their actions.

It’s difficult to imagine a more obvious “counter-witness” than the case of the lesbian couple in Boulder. Orthodox Christians of all denominations hold that sexual intimacy outside a marriage is morally wrong and that marriage is a covenant which can only occur between a man and a woman.

As Chaput says, these teachings “are central” to a Christian understanding of “human nature, family and happiness, as well as the organization of society.” Ignoring the contradiction would undermine the purpose for which Christian schools exist.

A Boulder gay rights group vowed that “decisions like this aren’t going to be tolerated.” I guess that means that in the name of “tolerance” and “love,” they won’t let Christians impose their faith on themselves.

This is exactly why Christian leaders from all denominations, including Archbishop Chaput, wrote the Manhattan Declaration—and why now nearly half a million Christians have signed it. Please, come to BreakPoint.org, and we’ll show you how you can sign the Manhattan Declaration yourself and take a stand for religious freedom, traditional marriage, and the sanctity of life.

We have to act. Because, given the trajectory of our culture, it won’t be long before many, indeed most of us, are facing the kind of challenges the Sacred Heart of Jesus School did. May we, please God, all of us stand for Truth.

No comments??? Maybe those who have looked in are thinking hard about what Chuch Colson said.

BTW, I have an interesting story about meeting Mr Colson if anyone’s interested.

Give it some time. It’s only been an hour. 🙂 I thought it was a good article, and appreciate him getting this message out to his mostly-protestant audience. I’ve always liked him.

As to sticking together… I wish we could. It is distressing when Catholics can’t agree on things like this – or the health care thing.

Yes, I’m interested.

Yes, I’m interested.

By us sticking together I meant Christians in general. I’m a non-catholic Christian, for better or worse.

When I have a little time, I’ll share my story. It’s quite unbelievable to me. 😃

You’ve posted this at perhaps the slowest point of time for these forums - Sunday morning.

Peace

Let me start the story. It will take time and more than one post.

I was anassociate pastor of a local non-denominational church in western MA. Our church had contact with a church on Martha’s Vineyard. For a while our church sent a pastor to teach a Bible study.

Fast forward a few yrs. I had become an elder in the church (long story). The church on MV had contact again with our church. The head pastor of the church made arrangement that some of our Christian high school students would come to the MV church and do open are mime and evangelism. I was asked to lead the effort.

The church was without a pastor. My wife and I were in contact with the church and we decide to go the week-end before the rest of the group to scope out the situation. I was asked to preach that weekend (and I was to preach the next weekend when the whole group was there).

Upon arriving the first weekend, we were picked up by a few from the church. They were all excited about their church. One thing they told us was that the summer before, Chuck Colson showed up at church. His family had, each year, a reunion on MV and liked to go to church while on the Vineyard is he could. Somehow he showed up at this church.

To be cont…

Is everyones heart beating excitedly as we wait for, ‘the rest of the story’?

Not sure I understand the question “Can’t we stick together?” I will say that my morality only allows for marriage between a man and woman. But doesn’t the issue go deeper than the school not allowing the kids to attend (a decision I agree with.) How do we as Christians battle the immorality of this Earth? I understand we pray, we fast, seek answers in our Bible, we seek Gods guidance, help financially with organizations who are seeking to restore morality or is this a Spiritual battle that is not ours as human to fight?

My intent was not that we stick together with those that promote sin as normal but all who are truly Christian, no matter what church we go to must stick together. Mr Colson, a non-catholic Christian, ‘goes to bat’ for the CC regularly in spite of the reality he may disagree with some of the teachings, he loves his catholic brothers and sisters and stands up for their rights.

How did Jesus fight the battle? He laid down His life and died for His persecutor. Someone once said the best way to defeat an enemy is to make her/him your friend. Of course we are speaking of human enemies, not spiritual ones like the devil.

Not sure how you all put those quotes in???

👍 AGREED!!

Part 2:

Update: My wife and I are on Martha’s Vineyard for a weekend. I’m to preach in a little church on the Vineyard. It’s Sunday morning and that Saturday I was told Mr Colson showed up at this church the last summer.

Being a little nervous, I was pasing the center isle of the little church. I happened to look out into the dirt parking lot. Guess who I thought I saw? Correct, Chuck Colson.

He ended up sitting just in front of my wife and me. At the time of the church service when you great each other, and before time for the message, I introduced myself as the guest speaker. I told him I’d be honored to let him do the speaking. He said no; he was there to listen.

I spoke from 2Peter 1:1-5 (amazing verses with a great message for us to meditate on - but back to the story which is about to be concluded). It’s an inspiring passage so I did a fine job with the message. After the service, Mr Colson came forward to shake my hand. He gave me a nice compliment (he said it was a good baptist message (I think he’s baptist) and I told him I wasn’t baptist).

I’ll never forget the experience realizing Mr Colson is no better than anyone but it’s my story and I was blessed.

Can we find areas to agree on so the Gospel of Jesus able to save souls can go to the lost souls of our world? Jesus said they’d know us by our love for one another (or something quite like that).

OK, since I am spending Palm Sunday morning:( recovering from what my grandmother would have called ;)“the epizootic”, & must stay in away from my fellowman in the interests of keeping my germs to myslef…

I do agree that the right decision was made. :shrug:Seems like a no-brainer. Maybe I am ascribing bad motives to the 2 lesbians in the case, but it looks to me like they were looking to make a little political hay: Either:
(A) They were hoping the child could stay, & they would trumprt to the media that the “Catholic school allows our daughter to attend, aren’t they enlightened?”, or:
(B) They were hoping that just what has happened would happen, & they could make political hay out of that.
Neither case seems to be good for the child. (And even if the women’s motives were better than I credit them for having, the same applies).
In either case, Chuck Colson was right.
Mr Colson, a non-catholic Christian, ‘goes to bat’ for the CC regularly in spite of the reality he may disagree with some of the teachings, he loves his catholic brothers and sisters and stands up for their rights.
The last I knew, Mr Colson also:) loved his Catholic wife.👍
But that was many years ago; I hope the same is still true, but I don’t keep up with Mr Colson.

I appreciate Mr. Colson’s support. I wouldn’t be suprised if the ACLU steps in and tries to force the school to accept the child. If the parents won, after all that fussing & fighting, I can’t imagine it would be a good environment for the child? Hopefully they will consider their child above their “cause.”

Regarding sticking together… Catholics and Evangelicals work together on many issues. The pro-life issue comes to mind. 👍

How about lost souls?

Has it been people’s experience that it is generally evangelicals who do not want to stick together with Catholics? That has been my experience. Just one example; I listen to Wretched Radio off and on, which is an evangelical radio show, and they have talked about the Manhattan declaration now and then. It is their position (obviously not the entire evangelical world’s position) that the declaration is a bad thing and have taken Mr. Colson to task for signing it. They see any agreements with believers who are “not Christian” (Catholics) 🤷 and who do not believe in Grace Alone  as a compromise to the “Christian faith”… Which, to them, does not include Catholicism.

God bless

If you and I are out together sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, how important is it that the person ends up in the CC, IYO?
