Cardinal Arinze: not even Church authority can break the marriage bond

Cardinal Francis Arinze, the retired prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, took a firm stand against changing Church teaching regarding marriage and the reception of the Eucharist, in an interview with the Crux news site.

Marriage creates an indissoluble bond, the Nigerian cardinal insisted, and “not even the authority of the Church can break it.” He added: “We cannot improve on what Christ has said… We cannot be more merciful than Christ.”

“The Eucharist is not something we possess, and we can give to our friends and those with whom we sympathize,” the cardinal continued.

Cardinal Arinze is a great gift to the Church, and his birthday is coming up next week on November 1. I know that because he spent one of his birthdays in our parish. I was lucky enough to have a reserved seat for the mass in the cathedral choir loft. If you sing in a cathedral choir long enough you get to meet lots of VIP’s.
