L’Osservatore Romano has published comments made by the future Pope Francis on the celebration of the Mass. The March 2005 address was delivered during a meeting of the Congregation for …

From the article
Cardinal Bergoglio added that the variety of options in the current missal is “remarkable” compared to the Eastern liturgy and that there is thus no need for “superfluous, poor texts of wild ‘creativity.’”
This implies that in the Eastern liturgy, there may indeed be need for superfluous, poor texts of wild creativity. I would be interested in reading the original. As it is, it’s not clear whether this mishmash is a result of poor reporting by Catholic Culture, poor editing of the transcript by L’Osservatore Romano, or Cardinal Bergoglio’s poorly constructed presentation.

This was in a 2005 address delivered. Does this hold the same weight as that of Cardinal Ratzinger’s delivered (before he became Pope) where he called the liturgy of the Latin RIte “banal” and “fabricated”?

I don’t think he’s implying anything in regards to Eastern Rites. I believe he’s simply saying that the Roman Rite has so many options, that people shouldn’t feel the need to “improve” on the liturgy.

I don’t think he meant to imply anything about the Eastern churches either. However, the way it’s written does imply that.

“Unlike the Easterners, we have a lot of options, so we don’t have to wildly distort our liturgy.”

“Unlike Mr. and Mrs. Smith next door, we get plenty of exercise, so we don’t need to beat our kids.”

“Unlike Bolivia, the US has ample supplies of seafood, so there is no need to invade neighboring countries.”

It simply sounds bad, and because it’s probably wrong I was wondering if the Holy Father wrote it or delivered it poorly, if it was poorly edited by L’Osservatorio Romano, or if it was misreported by Catholic Culture.

Regardless of whether it was poor translation or badly phrased original text… no one unless they are particularly fond of taking offense and being indignant about everything… would think that the Eastern Church ‘makes up superfluous, poor texts of wild creativity during liturgy’. It is pretty universally known to be a traditional and reverent service I would think.

However, knowing the penchant for offense that some have, I daresay it will become an issue to gnaw on for those who dislike the Pope.
