I have never been able to grasp the view by some that Cardinal Burke is some sort of exceptionally heroic churchman. I have never found him to be all that charismatic, or appealing. Certainly, he is a capable functionary, but I don’t perceive that he is properly cast in the leadership role. He just is not that compelling a figure, in my view.

Personally, I am not a very political animal. Perhaps, one might need to examine this through a political lens to better understand all of the angst and hysteria regarding Cardinal Burke. I cannot see it…at all.

I wish him all the best in his new assignment, but I must confess that rumors of his martyrdom have been greatly exaggerated.
You’re right in that Cardinal Burke isn’t very charismatic. He doesn’t have an appealing speaking manner at all. But I like that he stands up for sound and proper Church teaching. As far as being demoted, well, we as Catholics are required, if the situation arises, to pick up our Cross and follow our Lord. I think that something good will come of Cardinal Burke’s new position and status. It remains to be seen as to just what that may be.
Even though I consider myself to be a traditionalist, I think it’s fine that Cardinal Burke has this new position in the Church. I also think that he may have a chance of being ‘papabile’ in the next conclave.

I do say, many thought the same of some of our most heroic saints in their day. They were criticized and resented and suffered humiliation. This current age is fond of maligning virtue and truth while championing the oppposite. As a Catholic, I care absolutely nothing about charismatic and popular characteristics; in fact the opposite gives me pause to consider. “As the world hated me, so will it hate you.” (That’s a quote from our Savior, Jesus Christ, btw.) No, do not look at this through a political lens, because the battle being fought is a spiritual one.

Fortunately he now has loads more time to travel and speak!
👍

Most of the “controversial” things Cardinal Burke has said over the last several years had nothing to do with his office. I don’t expect much to change in that regard.

Some of you may remember that when he first went to the Vatican, there were lots of liberals who were very happy that he was being “removed” from his diocese and being put on a desk job. Funny how that worked out.
