Cardinal Burke says he is “sympathetic” to marriage difficulties

Cardinal Raymond Burke says he is “sympathetic to the situation of people who are suffering, because of matrimonial difficulties,” in a new interview published on Sunday.
The cardinal, a critic of calls for married and divorced people to be allowed to receive communion, said “less than a truthful response” isn’t “worthy” of people in these situations.
He was speaking to the podcast Thinking With the Church, and said too many people he meets are concerned and confused by the ongoing debate on the issue.

We mustn’t forget that the very public, and often polemical, statements and actions of Cardinal Burke have gone a long way in promoting this idea of his being the perceived leader of a movement of dissent (misbegotten “cause” as you put it).

I hope this is an indication that he will be taking a less confrontational approach in the future. He had become for those of us who love and support our current pontif a bit of a controversial , and antagonistic figure within the church hierarchy.

He is a Cardinal, and I respect his office greatly. I truly hope he is trying to soften his mode of commentary so that what he is saying , rather than how he is communicating it , can be genuinely assessed (without all the angst).

I pray for concord amongst those who lead our church through the storms and strife that this world seems to forever offer. God bless Cardinal Burke ( and Pope Francis).
 
It is my hope that Cardinal Burke will continue to speak out against the confusion in LA that undermines and contradicts the teachings of Christ, the Magisterium and the teaching of St. John Paul. It is his responsibility and obligation as a Cardinal. The Church is Catholic, which can not mean that the very same irregular marriage can be accepted in Munich, San Diego or Chicago, while it can not be accepted in Philadelphia, Quebec or Lagos. The ideas of mercy, compassion, love and forgiveness are not newly found ideas that humanity has just discovered in the past 4-5 years. They have been part of the Magisterium for 2,000 years.

I care not for any opinions of internet warriors, among others, that attach attributes to Cardinal Burke that don’t belong to him. Speaking out for Christ and defending the Magisterium against confusion which divides the Church is critical. People can call Cardinal Burke whatever names they want, or they can be dismissive of him. But I hope and pray the good Cardinal will not be deterred nor be intimidated by them. I am grateful for the faithful service that Cardinal Burke has given to the Church–especially during the past few years. It is precisely these types courageous acts and sacrifices that assure us that Christ has kept His promise to protect the Church from the gates of hell.

May God continue to bless Cardinal Burke and Cardinal Sarah…

Dear Unafraid,

You are right. 🙂

However, I think a lot of the perceived “conflict” was created by a handful of extreme websites and bloggers who tried to co-opt the Cardinal. When he did not do so, they showed their teeth and accused him of cowardice and apostasy. Not a nice bunch of people at all. They need our prayers.
