Cardinal criticises Euro MP over anti-Islam stand: reports

(ROME) - Italy’s top prelate Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco has denounced a Euro MP in the anti-immigration Northern League for his anti-Islamic views, press reports said Saturday.

The Bishop of Genoa and president of the Italian episcopal conference voiced his “total disapproval” of Euro MP Mario Borghezio’s vow to “defend Christianity against profanation by Islam” made in a church in the northern port on Friday.

… Cardinal Bagnasco condemned Borghezio for making his statement in a church, which he said was “solely a place for prayer and worship,” the Corriere della Sera said.

what tolerant cardinals we have!!

it’s not like islam is a threat to our strong catholic church in europe or anything. let the muslims have the vatican, then they will treat us well.

I agree…I was trying to find a link directly to the diocese in Italy and see if anything was mentioned on it, but I could not. I think we need more information as well.

The Cardinal was probably right, if anything, it was best to keep quiet about it. There is no need for provocation, certainly this little comment the MP made wasn’t going to bring massive changes in legislation the next day, but it’s likely to be soaked by the ayatollah’s waiting to preach some new assassination target.

i disagree. the church is feminized and pacifist. any sign of zealousness should be supported at this point.

this cardinal would likely decry the crusades and inquisition with this attitude.

The “Northern League” in Italy is “anti-immigration” because their politics are close to what the KKK preach. It’s not “anti-immigration” because they don’t want so many people moving to Italy; they are “anti-immigration” because they are racists.

I don’t want to use the term “fascist” because the word has been so diluted; however, politically they would be very comfortable with life under Mussolini.
