As a recent convert to the Catholic Church, I didn’t know by my getting remarried and having relations I was committing mortal sin until I learned of it in RCIA. If I would have known this before hand five years ago, I wouldn’t have been remarried until my previous marriage was annulled if at all. I was horrified when this was explained to me and we agreed upon and immediately began living as brother and sister until our annulment process is complete with the understanding living this way may be permanent. If I didn’t know I was committing mortal sin and stopped upon learning of it, am I forgiven or even culpable? I’ve been curious about that.
