Dolan suggested that from a pastoral point of view, too much attention has been devoted to the Communion debate, since those Catholics who are divorced and remarried, who are still coming to Mass, and who faithfully observe the Church’s rules, represent a “distinct minority.”

Call it wild eyed speculation, marriage and not divorce will be central to the document, but there still will be what to some will be considered a bombshell, but is not a big deal…I just have this hunch we may, in the near future, see the ordination of married men as priests.

In my 65 years as a Catholic, I learned not to expect anything.

We already know that holy orders will not be addressed in this document.
 
Of course it will be about marriage, marriage by couples who have been previously divorced and want to come back to the Church and receive the Sacraments.

You are right that the individuals are married. But it’s not their marriage that keeps them from Communion. It’s the subsequent living arrangement.

I haven’t heard anyone, in the context of the Synod or surrounding debate, call for the approval or acceptance of these subsequent relationships as marriages.

Well, those are Christ’s words, not mine, the Pope’s, or the Bishops’.

And it’ll be a long time before I’m embarrassed to quote the Gospel.

What’s in a name? A grave, un-absolved sin by any other name would carry the same sanction.

But Jesus was talking in a different context than what these couples find themselves in.

When reading the text, keep in mind that they were trying to trick Jesus, and also, divorce was used as a means toward legal fornication. Generally , men could file for divorce, not so women.

Then why didn’t he say that?

I mean, the disciples do say, “wow, that’s super hard Jesus” and he basically says “deal with it”.

You’d think if Jesus felt there were exceptions like “I just don’t love him anymore” or “he lost his job” then he would’ve said that somewhere in his very clear statement.

Read the chapter 19 of Matthews Gospel in its entirety.

It begins with :
Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him,* saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever. Mathew 19:3

What were they trying to “test” Jesus on ?

The Jewish law on divorce as given by Moses.

However, Jewish marriage and divorce has to be understood in the historical context of that time.

But I’m not the one saying anything different than what the Church teaches, but Pope Francis has told us how to respond to divorced Catholics;

Oh, so you’re saying that Jesus words on the subject are only directed to the people of a certain time and place.

It seems, he thinks that he is the Church in one person and can interpret the Bible on his own.
