Cardinal Dolan on the Colbert Report

And so I’m glad to see the Cardinal hold his own. He’s got a great sense of humour and it really worked well with Colbert’s style of comedy.
 
I didn’t find the show that hilarious this time, and I wondered why Cardinal Dolan didn’ use the opportunity to clarify the difference between redemption and salvation.
 
I watched like maybe 3 minutes of it, I don’t see the point of it other than for Cardinal Dolan to peddle his e book, an Colbert taking the time to make some lame jokes towards being catholic. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are supposed to be mock news shows making fun of the media and current events but unfortunately it has become another source of news just with a slight twist of supposed entertainment in it for those in the age range that the shows are targeting.
 
Thank you for posting this. I found the interview not only entertaining, but informative, and I’m very glad the good Cardinal is taking great care in heeding the call of the New Evangelization 🙂 Often times the mainstream media portrays the Church as “out-of-touch” or worse…more than anything, as Catholics, we must continue to strive towards putting ourselves out there in order to spread the Good News of Christ and that we are the face of humanity, not some caricature many outside the Church like to portray us as.
 
I loved it. I really appreciate Cardinal Dolan’s ability to reach across to non-Catholics without compromising or coming across pompous and offensive. He didn’t get to show it too much, but he has a great sense of humor.

Exactly.

Like it or not, the Church has to use every means at her disposal to get the message out. Cardinal Dolan clearly understands that.
 
Stephen Colbert didn’t have the correct information on what the Pope said with regard to atheists. Pope Francis never said that atheists go to heaven. He was only talking about working together with each other for peace while we are here in this world. He didn’t even mention Heaven in that discussion. It was the media reporting at the time that misrepresented what the Pope said, and I guess the misinformation stuck in people’s minds. But I’m willing to give Stephen Colbert the benefit of the doubt and assume that he made an honest mistake.

I’m wondering why Cardinal Dolan didn’t correct that statement.

I’m glad Pope Francis got elected Pope. He can be charitable and loving but also not soften the truth through political correctness. Cardinal Dolan has been “gun-shy” (his own words). The Bishops and priests in Ireland are witholding communion from pro-abortion politicians, meanwhile Cardinal Dolan has been afraid to even say people like Gov Cuomo “aren’t in bad standing” with the Church.

He seems like a really nice guy. But the political correctness and softening of the truth drives me mad!

Even though I was annoyed by that, at least he came across well in the interview, so I’m sure the Holy Spirit will work through him regardless.

Colbert asked the Cardinal about the Pope saying “all atheists are redeemed.” The entire crowd cheered. The Cardinal laughed and brushed it off. He didn’t clarify the difference between redemption and salvation.

He was then asked about Pope Francis saying “he doesn’t judge homosexuals.” Of course, implying that it’s ok. The Cardinal then went on to say that he doesn’t judge anyone, only God can judge. But he didn’t specify whether or not homosexuality is a sin-- which is what the question was directly about, and spun to say that Pope Francis doesn’t think homosexuality is a sin.

He’s very sociable and nice. But he’s “gun-shy” (his own words).
 
I don’t understand why so many Catholics hero worship Colbert, why do people see this man as some devout Catholic?

I will double-check, but I am pretty sure on this one.

Of course the Pope, or no human, has the authority to judge homosexuals, or any other person. I thought we all knew that. Jesus made that point clear.

I will give Stephen Colbert credit for going on The View and explaining accurately the Catholic Church’s teaching about why we suffer and why coming from a big family, as he did (he was one of eleven siblings), isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He talked about how his Catholic faith helped him and his family deal with the tragedy and hardship of losing his father and two siblings in a plane crash in 1974 when he was only 10 years old. And they all let him talk without an interruption. I think because of his popularity as a comedian they had their guard down and didn’t expect him to say something serious.

I’m willing to give the Pope the benefit of the doubt and assume he made an honest mistake when he made any comment that would make any Catholic think non believers would go to heavean let alone work together for peace in the life we know here on earth.
I’ll forgive him for thinking heaven is where I want to be. I can not speak for anyone else.

God won’t force you to be with him in Heaven. But if the non-believer, “turns to him with a sincere and contrite heart” then God will have mercy. That’s what the Pope said, and it’s nothing new. The secular media has once again proven that they can misrepresent Catholic teaching.

Because it’s “hip” or the “cool” thing to do.

He admitted on NPR his parents raised him under Cafeteria Catholicism, all he does is allow people to feel that there are two types of Catholicism, the Kennedy Joe Biden kind , and it’s okay to dissent from Magisterial teaching… and “the overly staunch incorrect Catholicism that even Jesus would reject because it’s mean”

Don’t know why because he’s a celebrity we’re to give him the benefit of the doubt when he actively subverts the faith, with those he associates with publicly as well as very irreverent statements which promote gay marriage.

There’s a tendency , that I have been guilty of in the past, where one thinks they can embrace the world at the same time, while still feeling they are a “good Catholic” hence the need to be approved or follow secular media to the point where they’re fawning over just an individual whose actions are clearly dissident, but he’s famous so he deserves respect.

He needs prayers not our laughs. There are so many young Catholics who see him as a public Catholic and hear his irreverence to the faith and its teaching, that is all too overlooked. When I was a youth, I used to feel comfortable and I know many family members who subscribe to that secular-ly influenced dissent through media figures such as him, where it calms ones’ conscience to believe he is still a good Catholic.

That place where those who followed God go we Catholics call that place Heaven. Have you read the Catechism of the Catholic Church about the subject of God, Heaven, and Hell? I used to be an agnostic, by the way.
