That would be magnanimous if cardinal dolan took in two immigrant kids to live at his private residence!

The US should open its southern most borders, withdraw the guards and let everyone into this prosperous nation!
Is this a Joke or a quote from the National "c"atholic distorter?

I don’t see how any nation could do without clear established borders…this if anything is against Catholic teaching and is somewhat irresponsible.

While we are at it, lets just abolish the government itself too and join mexico…this makes about as much sense as letting everyone in uncontrolled, its also worth noting that the people coming across the border are not just from Mexico.

I am 100% for legal immigration but at this moment in time, having no controls whatsoever is just insane.

I guess my posts are just unclear. We are not disagreeing. I am saying that the USCCB, as a conference has no teaching mission.

I was going to ask for a link, then I decided I was being lazy and looked it up myself. The only reason I posted was for context, not really to give an opinion.

We should end birthright citizenship. No other country has it.
Also, we should have a guest worker program which allows folks to work and return.
The most effective work would be to end US drug addiction and enforce the laws against criminal activity. For that to happen parents must learn to love their children again and not neglect or reject them.
The poor people in Latin America have very little law enforcement and no recourse or escape from the violent, criminal gangs (many were trained in the US inner cities). The Free Masons who run their countries don’t help either. For all this to happen we need a spiritual revival, especially among Catholics, that all the Commandments need to be obeyed.
Those who legally come here must pay lots of money and jump through lots of paperwork over and over. Unnecessary and dangerous vaccinations are required etc… I know because my daughter-in-law has had to do this. Why? Then those who enter illegally are welcomed with open arms and no fines or penalties ro requirements? This is an injustice!!!
This whole situation has been made worse by Obama who is trying to distract us from the coming economic demise and war that he is trying to bring upon us. He could have done more to help the Latin American countries with local law enforcement, too, through US policies, etc… The security is terrible there.
Meanwhile these illegal immigrants are not prepared to enter our society and can easily be exploited and used and in effect become second class citizens. Learning English must be a requirement. Other countries require the learning of their native language. How can anyone function as a full citizen without a working knowledge of English? Are the candidates going to give speeches in Spanish?
In most countries of the world, children are learning English in school because everyone knows that the way to better themselves is through acquisition of English. Most will also never come to the US or even want to come here. They do not consider it an injustice to learn English.

Immigrant children coming into this country have been the subject of much attention, debate – and, fortunately, great compassion by many – especially our Catholic charitable agencies and parishes. For the most part, they are young people, without their parents, who are arriving in this country seeking a refuge from poverty or gang violence. I was privileged today to travel to Northern Westchester and celebrate Mass for a group of these young people, to meet with them, and learn a little more about their circumstances and see where they are temporarily staying until they can be reunited, most often with their family members.

Former Mayor Ed Koch once told me, “Two women welcomed the immigrants to New York: Lady Liberty and Mother Church.” And he was right. I just returned from a brief trip to Ireland, and people there still talk gratefully of the welcome given to so many Irish refugees during the great famine of the 19th Century. We are called upon again today to care for a new group of immigrants, only this time the immigrants are teenagers – or younger.

Caring for the downtrodden, the outcast, the stranger among us, is part of our call as Catholics, and we here in the Archdiocese of New York have been doing just that for more than 200 years. Lincoln Hall, for instance, where I celebrated Mass this morning, began as a residential treatment center back in 1863 to care for orphans left destitute after the Civil War. The Archdiocese of New York has a long and proud tradition of caring for newcomers to our country.

Now, together, we are facing another crisis, one of children fleeing violence and risking their lives with the hope of finding family and shelter here. Pope Francis said it so well, late last month, when he reminded us that “this humanitarian emergency requires, as a first urgent measure, these children be welcomed and protected.”
And that is just what Catholic Charities, parishes, professionals and volunteers throughout the country are doing.

At Lincoln Hall and in similar residences children receive the temporary housing, education, health, and legal support they need to survive and begin to re-establish their lives.

Immigration is not a new “issue.” I have been very much preoccupied with the vulnerability of our immigrants and refugees because I meet them everywhere I go throughout our archdiocese: men, women, and children so grateful to be in America, so searching to find a home here, so eager to work, settle down, and become part of a nation that has traditionally welcomed and embraced the immigrant. I am grateful to those political leaders on both sides of the aisle, people like Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Peter King, who have led the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. I am more than frustrated that too much partisan and self-interest politics up to this point has trumped the common good of our country. But. I am not giving up hope, nor the struggle. I continue to work and pray for the type of immigration reform our country needs to remain strong.

But these young people can’t wait for immigration reform. As Pope Francis rightly points out, this is a humanitarian emergency, and however they got here, these young people must be cared for now. Politicians and pundits might argue about how best to handle this humanitarian crisis. For us, the answer is simple thanks to guidance Jesus gave us more than 2,000 years ago:

“Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.”

The majority of these children are Catholic. Our Churches a woefully short on children. I see a real upside to this problem.

If these kids were predominately Muslim, would you have a change of heart?

Also, the CC is indeed short of children, but why is that? Do you think this would change the demographics to your advantage in the long term, and how so?

Thanks.

A majority of Catholics no longer obey church teaching and use contraceptives. Some even abort their children now. That problem will not change with the influx of immigrant children.

Not about the children. But, here is a thought. If we as Catholics reject these children and do not embrace the gifts that they can give the Church, they will be easy converts for radical Muslims.

If they were Muslim children, left alone in the world and we as Catholics embraced them, they might (with the power of the Holy Spirit) be brought into the Church and as children they would bring their gifts to further the message of the love and charity. A message that we must all strive for.

Demographics is a sterile governmental term. It does not express love, hope and generosity. One child brought to Christ’s love is not demographics. We must move away from statistics and move toward the beauty of the souls of children all children - born and unborn.

To answer the first question why are there few children. There are probably plenty of reasons but my guess is that we don’t embrace children. We as lay people, are afraid to reach out to the future.

To quote Saint John Paul: Be not afraid. Don’t be afraid of statistics. Don’t be afraid of demographics and above all don’t be afraid of children - any child - anywhere. They need our love, not our fear.

Rejecting these children come from the same source. The fear of children and the rejection of children.

Perhaps if we open our hearts to these children we can open our hearts for the unborn and cease living a sterile life.

Do you recommend that we take money from our children and our grandchildren in order to support these children? What about American children who live under the threat of violence and also suffer from malnutrition? Is it ok to increase their suffering in order to ease the suffering of others?

It’s not a question of will. It’s a question of means.

I am glad to hear that Cardinal Dolan met with them and celebrated Mass with them. That was a very kind and virtuous thing for him to do.

That said, I feel very strongly that we need to allow these children and teenagers to stay here in the United States. It would be cruel to send them back to the countries that they fled from until the problems there are solved.

There is plenty of food to care for all the children. As long as there are adults in this country who are over-weight: adults in this country who own two cars: adults in this country who have a nice house with no children: as long as there are adults flying off to Disney Land and Las Vegas: as long as the adults in this nation spend billions of dollars on sports: as long as there is money, food, shelter in abundance for pampered adults, there is no excuse that children are hungry in this country or hungry children on the border.

All children are the same. Those of us who are neglecting the children on the border are the same ones who are neglecting those across the street.

I am to old now. My husband is 70 years old and is not in good health. But we have tried to walk the walk. We have been foster parents and we have filled our home with our children, adopted children, grandchildren and other children who have, one way or another, blessed our lives. Don’t tell me there is not a way for the lay people of the Church to step up and help frightened and hungry children where ever we may find them.

If you are proposing that those who have more than they need open their homes and wallets to the needy children, I am with you, but it’s an unlikely proposition.

If your suggestion is that the Federal Government provide for their needs, I am opposed. The Government gets its funding from debt and from people who are already struggling.

Like I said, “Those who neglect the border children are the same as those who neglect the child across the street.”

So don’t use economics as an excuse for the neglect. We can bring them in and then try to do the best we can to help them. If the Christian people want to wash their hands of the problem then we had better quit making excuses for our behavior and call it for what it is (greed and lazy) Griping because we are paying taxes to an extremely inefficient government is a farce. Check with Catholic Charities and find the best way to make your money work for these and other children. If you are concerned about our own children -those across the street on which you live - reach out to them.

I see that you are willing to cast dispersion and insult people who may not agree with you, but, I don’t understand how you propose to help the children??? Catholic Charities is not helping these people.

Not at all. I want people to own their own reasons. These children are caught between the two major political ideologies. The political left is using this situation to further it’s agenda and to exploit the passions of the political right and the political right is using this situation to show how stupid President Obama is - a fact that I don’t disagree with.

I am horrified by Christian people picketing and yelling about how terrible it is to have these children entering into the United States. The political right in this situation is no more open to life and welfare of children than the political left is open to life and welfare of children. The political left aborts children while the political right denies love to these children. These children are caught in a political game.

Catholic Charities and Charities of other Christian Churches are working with and for these Children. Call your parish and find out which ones you can donate to that will do the most for them. If your parish does not know call another one.

I’ll add this link from Catholic Charities. They are helping. When the news stations started picking up the story I was happy that one of the first things I saw was Catholic Charities.

About 80% of these “children” are males, many die on the way up here, human trafficking is a horrible criminal enterprise yet lax border security has encouraged much of this. The notorious gangs have been found to exist within these children. It’s not as well intentioned as some would have us believe.

Sooo. I have “male” grand children I don’t love them any less than my “female” grand children. Children are children and these children need help. Whatever reason, these children are here now. Should something be done to stop this human disaster at the source? Certainly, I agree that it was the incredibly stupid actions of President Obama that escalated the situation. But, that gives Christians no excuse to bring further pain to these children.

They are here and Christ has given us the challenge to turn our back on these children or to receive them in love. I don’t care what non-Christian people are doing. They don’t have an mandate from our Lord - but we do. And wringing our hands, picketing screaming and running around in circles is not the mandate that He has given us.

Are the problems great? Yes. Are we all able to give hands on care to this children? No. But, the very least we can do is pray for them and stop treating them as if they are the enemy. They are not the enemy and if we reach out to them that can be our allies. They can bring their gifts. They can bring their faith.
