Cardinal: I want to return to Medjugorie

Cardinal Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, has made more comment about his time spent in Medjugorje recently.

Cardinal Schonborn says that Medjugorje had played an important part for many young priests on their personal path to the priesthood; etc…

While I do not deny this, I think it is important to understand that there are prayers to God through Mary on both sides (those who believe in the appartions and those who do not believe).

If people believe there is a hoax and pray for graces, then they were granted as Cardinal Schonborn says; for example more prieslty vocations.
If people belive the apparitions are true, then their prayers have also been granted.
Whether it is a hoax or not, we have won through Mary’s intercesssion.

The bishop of the local Mostar-Duvno diocese, Bishop Peric, has repeatedly warned against the dangers of “the Medjugorje phenomenon” and strongly discouraged confidence in the alleged apparitions—complained that the visit by Cardinal Schönborn had caused new pastoral problems for his diocese. Citing a list of conflicts and irregularities arising from the activities of the alleged seers and their supporters, Bishop Peric voiced “regret” that the Austrian cardinal’s appearance had lent new credibility to their claims.

The Cardinal has not done enough (in my mind) through his press releases to support Bishop Peric and the great work he has done to bring the truth to light. Maybe the Cardinal did discuss things with Bishop Peric before his visit to Medjugorie. But I have my doubts because the Cardinal has not shed light on this. Cardinal Schonborn seems to justify this by saying it was a private visist, like a pilgrim.
 
The following link has a translation of a statement issued by Bishop Peric, of the Diocese of Mostar-Duvno, regarding Cardinal Schonborn’s visit. Apparently Schonborn’s office never notified the Diocese that he was coming nor did the priests in Medjugorie notify the Diocese that they were expecting a visitor. It also doesn’t appear that Schonborn had a meeting with Peric at all during this visit. It seems from this statement Peric believes Schonborn’s visit was disruptive and sent mixed messages about the Church’s position on these alleged apparitions.

It seems to me that as long as there’s a question about the legitimacy of the apparitions and the visionaries, no member of the clergy should be going there as a pilgrim, privately or otherwise, and especially not making positive public statements about it.
 
Amen to the concept of an “unbiased” clergy when they deal with investigations like this. Indeed, I even posted something on my blog that was actually syndicated via a link on Reuters:

Just wondering: why would Schonborn do this when he knew Bishop Peric’s position in this whole thing? Didn’t he know that this would cause consternation among the clergy and divide public opinion (yet again!) on these apparitions? Just seems like a foolish decision to me . . . 🤷
