Cardinal Kasper’s proposals are not a development, but a denial of doctrine.
Here is another article saying essentially the same thing as the link in the prior post when applied to Newman’s (7) Tests of Authentic Development:Vatican observer Sandro Magister believes Pope Francis’ enthusiasm for Cardinal Kasper is waning. He notices that Cardinal Gerhard Müller, prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine for the Faith and the most authoritative of the five cardinals of the anti-Kasper pre-synod book, continues to speak out against a subtle Christological heresy which consists in separating doctrine from pastoral practice.
- Acceptance of Communion for divorced and remarried persons does **not ** preserve the type of marriage, which entails indissolubility. The type of marriage with Christ’s permanent love for the Church, his bride, is broken.
- This new doctrine establishes a new principle, namely that in some cases marriage is dissoluble; marriage is not permanent. There is thus a discontinuity with earlier doctrine.
- The proposed doctrine seems to assimilate the Christian practice of mercy and forgiveness, but** it contradicts others **such as justice with regard to the obligations that derive from the nature of marriage. It is doubtful that it can pass the test of assimilative power.
- Communion in these circumstances does not follow the penitential practice present since the early Church by which a person in a state of sin must leave the situation of sin and follow a path of conversion before being reconciled to the Church, thus coming into Communion.
- Christ’s teaching about the permanence of marriage and the sin of adultery does **not **anticipate in any way this new doctrine of divorce and remarriage, and less of Communion for those who are sadly in this situation.
- Admission to Communion of divorced persons who have entered a second bond does not have a protective action on the practice of marriage in the Church. Instead of having a conservative action, it weakens marriage by removing one of the consequences to divorce and remarriage.
- Newman would also argue that the proposed doctrine would not add vitality to the Christian reality of sacramental marriage. On the contrary, the practice of divorce and remarriage, and in some places of Communion for persons divorced and remarried, have become more accepted.
Given this analysis, it is very doubtful that the doctrine on Communion for divorced and remarried persons proposed by Cardinal Walter Kasper can be considered authentic development of doctrine.
Here is Cardinal Caffarra as quoted in the National Catholic Register article:Cardinal Kasper Braces for Synod ‘Battle’

Hundreds of Priests State ‘Unwavering Fidelity’ to Church’s Doctrine

LongingSoul, in all charity ideas that border on heresy have no place in the discussion. They confuse the issue and present a false narative which, when grabbed by the media and those who are opposed to the perinial teachings of the Church, causes confusion and scandal. Most of us following along with the Synod journey never saw the Pope as ‘supporting Card. Kaspers proposal’… we recognised that the Pope was supporting the presentation of Card. Kaspers ideas as an important element of the whole discussion about communion and the remarried. We well know that there are some forces who resisted any exploration or even mention of the topic whatsoever and Pope Francis having faith that this wound in body of the Church needs to be addressed under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, was in battle against those ‘inflexibly hostile’ forces.
This is not a case of Pope Francis ‘support of CK’s proposal’, waning. I suspect that when we again hear from those trying to silence all discussion on the topic… they’ll jump on Pope Francis again for ‘supporting the proposal’. Such silly political journalism.
I could also say that there is no place in the discussion for the hostile and inflexible that don’t want to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the Church. Pope Francis invited Cardinal Kasper to introduce his ideas. That needs to be respected.LongingSoul, in all charity ideas that border on heresy have no place in the discussion. Of course. But one can’t blame those who still remember Pope Paul’s asking moral theologians to discuss the matter dealing with ABC, then deciding against their pro-ABC vote in his final determination. A lot of false hopes went down the drain and a lot left the church or ignored HV. Was all that necessary?I could also say that there is no place in the discussion for the hostile and inflexible that don’t want to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the Church. But do you not also remember the crowd of strong opposition to the whole idea of family planning at all that wanted to dominate in that discussion of family planning? They wanted the Church to ban even periodic abstinence around the natural cycle ie. what we now refer to as NFP.Of course. Remember when Arius had a say at Nicea? Was the Church tap-dancing on a doctrinal land mine there as well?LongingSoul, in all charity ideas that border on heresy have no place in the discussion. Just maybe those who you say are “hostile and inflexible” don’t actually believe that some of the *“proposals” *being offered are even under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.I could also say that there is no place in the discussion for the hostile and inflexible that don’t want to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the Church.
Correct, and the Pope called for open and honest debate, which includes having others point out where they felt that Cardinal Kasper erred. In fact, since the call was for open debate, it would have been an act of disobedience to hold back any reservations that a bishop had over +Kasper’s proposal.I could also say that there is no place in the discussion for the hostile and inflexible that don’t want to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the Church.
