ProVobis is quite right. The Church has condemned nobody. We are all responsible for our own fate. A person who divorces freely, remarries freely without a declaration of nullity, and freely consummates that union is likewise free at any time to rectify the situation by turning away from sin (repentance.) Nobody gets to Heaven or Hell by accident.

I completely understand. My confusion is if remarried person is able to go forward for a Blessing from the Priest and is not able to receive communion does that mean he is not excommunicated or is it the same thing?ie in both cases if you dont stop the adultery then you do not have full contrition…but why are they able to go forward for a Blessing?

Yes, there’s the rub. It’s an unfortunate consequence of this novelty of getting a blessing in the Communion line. That, too, is under careful consideration by the Holy See, who acknowledges it as a problem.

The real answer is that receiving a blessing means nothing about a person’s canonical status. Remarried people do not typically incur excommunications, but they are not in good standing or eligible to receive the Eucharist. Since a general blessing is available to all in the assembly at the end of Mass where it belongs, and priests and deacons are quite generous in bestowing blessings outside of the sacred liturgy, I see little need for clogging up the line for Holy Communion just for a personal affirmation that demonstrably causes scandal like this.

Many thanks that clears the confusion completely and im able to articulate this better to my elder 2 boys who at 21 yrs are needing clear answers to their questions.

Perhaps you may be able to clarify the churches position on the miracle healing of Kathleen Evans. Her miracle healing was approved by the church and allowed for Mary MacKillop to be declared a saint. Kathleen was married in the Catholic church, divorced and estranged from it…remarried in the Uniting Church…Comes back to the church and sacramental life. Is granted a miracle and a Saint is declared.

So…How did all this come about, given the rules that are applied by the church in respect to divorce and remarriage?

I look forward to your replies…it has me puzzled knowing what we know and the posts in this thread.

God doesn’t give up on anyone. …the result a return and repentance. Miracles happen to sinners and kathleen was thankful.

Excommunication is discipline and not a sentence to eternal damnation with no ability to return to Grace. Kathleen returned.

Exactly. And I should also think the Congregation for the Causes of Saints knows the Church’s law and can do proper theology.

The miracle and ability to return came through the Catholic Church…

Kathleen was not at fault re her first marriage…she responded to her call to give up smoking as it was killing her and then she received amazing Grace and she was thankful
…she didnt carry on smoking.

Kathleen was not at fault re her first marriage…
.
So…the Catholic church has an “at fault” clause when it comes to divorce and remarriage?
If one can prove to the church that their spouse was at fault in the marriage…the marriage can be annulled and you are free to remarry again???

Sorry…I think I need a little more detail to get me over the line with this. 🙂

No, it isn’t a matter of whose “fault” it is. An annulment is about whether there was a sacramental marriage (which is indissoluble) in the first place. Many factors come to bear on that question, too many to list here, but among them is whether the partners chose freely to enter marriage, and whether they knew what the Sacrament entails. If there was a valid marriage, then one cannot “remarry”, no matter how much one thinks on is “remarried”. That is what was called the state of adultery here. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t repent and end that state, which is what would have happened in the example of Kathleen.

Im not a priest and dont make decisions on anulment and marriage issues etc im just remarking on the link that states she returned to the Sacrements obviously after the decision of a priest…and im not going to argue with that! Whats clear is that she recieved amazing Grace and obviously thankful.

The “at fault” clause, as you put it, only applies to separation. If a person is not “at fault” he/she can separate, even divorce without committing a sin. It has nothing to do with any possible investigation of the marriage for an annulment.

Agree…But aren’t you curious? Many people find themselves estranged from the church through divorce and remarriage. This lady was in this same position and not only found her way back…but received a miracle as well. Aren’t you interested in the “how” and the application of Church Law re divorce and remarriage in this situation? It seems to me that God wants everyone despite our many failings…including those caught up in divorce/remarriage? 🤷

The trouble is we dont know all the details…what we dont know is whether she got a anulment or whether she could have done if applied before. Had her second husband been married and divorced or had he been a single man. Whatever kathleen returned to the sacraments afterwards so she obviously had absolution.God doesn’t give permission to sin. Im the youngest of 6 children and my mum’s first 2 from her first marriage. Im pretty sure the reasons for her leaving her 1st husband were not a lot more than she could do ‘better’. She married again to my dad but …and I dont know why she told me but she went to the docs pregnant with me to ask for an abortion but was refused. My mums not a christian so I had no faith upbringing. Cutting a long story short I am now Catholic and have a wonderful catholic husband with 8 kids. Now I could have the opinion that my mum would find it impossible to repent because I would not be here if she had not remarried . …God works through the mess and I pray for the hour of my mums death ( she is 80 yrs)that she comes to her senses as she has no faith and no joy…never has done. So through a def wrong situation im here and thankful for my life and family. But it is only through the witness of the catholic church that brought me in to a stable life and marriage…before becoming catholic I attended lots of different churches where divorce accepted and remarriage and to me the reasons become more and more trivial…its a downward spiral.sorry if this isnt a good answer.

Actually Kate…your story does perhaps demonstrate that maybe sometimes…God’s plan is bigger then what could possibly ever have been expected, given the circumstances at the time.

I guess…as with Kathleen Evans…it also highlights that very little can stand in the way of a person who truly seeks to come to Christ. Through him all things are possible.

It does however poke at my curiosity, given the churches strong stance on divorce and remarriage. Perhaps it is more forgiving in these matters then we are led to believe?

I think we are all repeating ourselves now but my point is the church is spot on to not affirm divorce. Where I live in the children’s primary school most boys dont have a dad living with them or its a step dad that stays a while.divorce is an absolute mess. You are concentrating too much on kathleens story I think…its like saying because God healed her lung cancer its sometimes ok to smoke!!smoking can kill and so does divorce and thank God the catholic church stands up against all pressure to weaken .

There already is a procedure for remarried divorcees to receive the Sacraments, stop living in sin. Remember, receiving communion will do them no good if they continue to commit adultery and end up in Hell for eternity. We might pat ourselves on the back at how wonderfully inclusive we are being, how kind we are being, but we might find ourselves in Hell next to them for failing to preach repentance. This whole conversation issues forth from the false premise of universalism.
Well put. Thank you for the clarity.
