Lord please welcome him into the fullness of Your merciful redemption in a final flood of grace.
Please bless and heal anyone who may have suffered harm.

For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, Have mercy on the soul of Cardinal Law, and on the whole world.

Eternal Rest grant unto Cardinal Law, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Cardinal Bernard Law, the former Boston archbishop who resigned in disgrace during the church sex abuse scandal, has died. Law and the Catholic Church were plunged into scandal in 2002, when it was revealed that Law and other bishops had covered for pedophile priests in the Boston Archdiocese. Law never faced criminal sanctions for his role in allowing abusive priests to remain in parishes and, in fact, went on to serve as archpriest of the Papal Liberian Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, a position he held until his death. His detractors found his second career at the Vatican to be a revealing referendum on the church’s legitimacy and its consideration of the scandal’s young victims.
He should have been Prosecuted for aiding and abetting Pedophiles Priests and Sexual Assault Priests instead of given a position of honor at the Vatican.

He wasn’t given a “position of honor” at the Vatican.

He was given a minor position in Rome.

But I agree he should have been prosecuted. What he did was abominable.

Yes, what happened in Boston and elsewhere in the US is terrible.

However, we must remember that in many cases, the Church authorities were listening to the prevailing wisdom, AT THE TIME.

In the 60’s through the early 80’s, this type of abuse was seen as “treatable”.

I don’t say this to defend abuse or people who cover it up, we just need to remember that much of the abuse happened during a time when the psychology/pathology of child abusers was just starting to be studied.

It is very easy to condemn people with what we know now.

That said, we need to pray for Cardinal Law.

What was this “position of honor” at the Vatican?
archpriest of the Papal Liberian Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome
So he was given a church to administer in Rome. This is not the Vatican it is Rome!

So why wasn’t he arrested and prosecuted.
He was spirited away as the saying goes.
So you say! BUt we all know that the US has extradition from Rome. Why didn’t the authorities is a warrant and extradite him. The Vatican did the right thing by removing him. It is not up to the Church to arrest him. You should be complaining about the Boston Police services. THey are the ones that make arrests. It this was done there is no doubt the Vatican would have sent him back. No doubt Law would have come back himself.

A few things:
He was not arrested or prosecuted because at the time there was no criminal statute that was applicable. the Church had no obligation under criminal law to report or really do anything. Related: since what he did was not criminal, no extradition would apply. Aiding and abetting under the circumstances would have been almost impossible to show. Sooo, that’s why he wasn’t prosecuted.
NOTE there was civil liability - not a criminal violation.

Mary Major is part of the Holy See, being extraterritorial to Italy.

It is totally disingenuous to suggest, as some have here, that the hierarchy was unaware of the gravity of the rape taking place. They most certainly knew, or should have known.

Make no mistake Arch-priest of Mary Major is most certainly a major church honor…

The AG of Mass looked into it and reported that Cardinal Law did not break any laws.

Garabedian is a snake himself.

Back when the dioceses was being rocked, Garabedian spoke about the Bishops remaining silent and they should be prosecuted.

However, it was then revealed that Garabedian got settlement’s for his clients with various dioceses, with the condition of remaining silent.

In other words, Garabedian was fine with the silence of Bishops back when he got settlements, and could’ve cared less about the future victims.

What Cardinal Law did that turned me against him during the sex abuse scandal, is that he wrote a glowing letter to the Bishop of San Bernardino, for Fr Shanley a known pedophile, just to get him out of his dioceses.

Later when Cardinal O’Malley took over the dioceses, it was revealed that Cardinal Law lived an extravagant lifestyle.

A mansion on Cape Cod, which was donated to the Archdioceses for the purpose of running youth retreats and other spiritual formation functions, Cardinal Law closed the mansion to the public and made it his personal summer residency.

He also lived in a Mansion in Brighton Mass.

Cardinal O’Malley sold off these properties and took up residency in an apartment in South Boston. Cardinal O’Malley also used public transportation and took a brown bag lunch to work everyday.

Cardinal O’Malley is a true man of God.

Here in the Boston Archdiocese it’s quite the glaring difference between the troubled and worldly Cardinal Law and the rock solid man of God Cardinal O’Malley.

I am honored to have Cardinal O’Malley as my Metropolitan.

I forgive you the best that I can, Cardinal Law. May God forgive you and show you His Mercy.
