Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger, Archbishop Emeritus of Paris, France, has died.

He was 80 years old and had served as a priest for 53 years. He had served as a bishop for 27 years and as a cardinal for 24 years.

The son of Polish immigrants, whose mother died at Auschwitz, had become the most influential Catholic figure in France for the past generation, and a confidant of the late Pope John Paul II.

Born Aaron Lustiger, the future prelate was baptized at the age of 14, taking the name Jean-Marie. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1954, and appointed Bishop of Orleans in 1979. He became Archbishop of Paris in 1981, and was raised to the College of Cardinals by John Paul II in 1983.

Another dramatic reminder of the cardinal’s Jewish origins came during a National Day of Remembrance for Holocaust victims in 1999, when Cardinal Lustiger joined in reading off the names of those who died. When he reached the name of Gisele Lustiger, the cardinal paused and added, softly, “my Mama.”
