His comments come after a senior Italian bishop said the Reformation was an 'event of the Spirit'
German cardinal Gerhard Müller has said the Protestant Reformation was not a “reform” but a “total change of the foundations of the Catholic faith”.

Writing for Italian website La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said modern-day Catholics often discuss Martin Luther “too enthusiastically”, mainly due to an ignorance of theology.

It is good to see Cardinal Müller speaking out against the atmosphere of adulation of the Reformation that is currently emanating from the Vatican. Perhaps him being removed from his position in the Vatican has a silver lining with him now being able to freely speak his mind without having to toe the “company line” as it is these days in Rome.

In one of my oh so rare moments of solidarity with the Pope, I will just say I will be glad when the anniversary of the Reformation is over. I do not think the Reformation was a revolution against the Holy Spirit. Now…it may have ended there. But it did not start there. No sirree. The Church has seen its share of revolutions against the Holy Spirit - long before Martin Luther was even a glint in his grand-daddy’s eye. Inside jobs. I’ll just leave it at that.

The pope may learn via this interview that there are unintended consequences to firing people.

Indeed. You’d think that would be obvious by now. As far as I am concerned we are getting pretty close to a revolution against the Holy Spirit right under our noses. And Cardinal Mueller of all people ought to know it. At least Luther was bound mind body and soul to the Word of God. He was fighting human neglect of it, distortions of it, excesses, corruptions. Did he fall into the same trap? Yes I agree he did. I have and never will deny that.

I would call the Reformation a revolution against a revolution against the Holy Spirit that lost the Holy Spirit along the way.
