Cardinal Mahoney bars Australian bishop with “doctrinal difficulties” from speaking in the archdiocese of Los Angeles

Los Angeles, May 19, 2008 / 07:10 pm (CNA).- Cardinal Roger Mahony has denied an Australian bishop permission to speak in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles after the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference issued a statement warning of “doctrinal difficulties” present in the bishop’s writings.

In 2007 Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, the retired auxiliary bishop of Sydney, published a book titled “Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church: Reclaiming the Spirit of Jesus.” Bishop Robinson argued in his book that because the Church refuses to reexamine Catholic teachings on extramarital sex, women priests, homosexuality, and papal power, the Church is not serious about responding to clerical sexual abuse but is only “managing” it.

In a May 8 statement, the Australian bishops said that Bishop Robinson’s questioning of the authority of the Catholic Church to teach the truth definitively is connected to the bishop’s “uncertainty about the knowledge and authority of Christ himself.”
 
The Austrailian bishops even are upset with this bishop. I don’t see why Cardinal Mahoney should not have some say on this matter as well? At least he’s exercising his use of authority in preventing him to talk.
 
From the day His eminence George Pell was incardinated as Archbishop of Sydney, Bishop Robinson, an auxiliary Bishop of Sydney, refused to speak with to him, seemed he did not like true Catholicism.
This is the behaviour of a dissident who has tantrums when things do not go his way. 😦

I also thought he might be baring an ‘orthodox’ bishop. I too apologize to the good Cardinal.
 
If Cardinal Mahoney has a problem with this Bishop’s writings he must REALLY be off base.
 
Meanwhile, Mahoney is asking the wealthiest parishes in L.A. to donate extra $$ to help pay for the sex abuse settlement. We’ve got homeless children here but we need $ to pay for the criminal acts of the priests and the folks who were accessories by hiding their activities. Convents are on the auction block, even the archdiocese office building has been sold. Yes, Mahoney knows alot about how sexual issues can lead you down the wrong road.
 
Ok, women’s ordination, priestly marriage, fine we have all heard these things before even from bishops and fine we can have nice discussions on these.

But come on !!! “extramarital sex” ? What is wrong with this bishop, funny I haven’t heard of him, probably because he is retired, who knows what false things he has taught his congregation when he was active.

No doubt he has doctrinal difficulties and perhaps difficulty with scripture too.

Cardinal Pell’s a strong speaker and brilliant man, I’m glad we have him as Cardinal in Sydney
