I am always skeptical when whoever cannot even spell the cardinal’s name correctly.

Do you think Father Z was referencing His Excellency Bishop Williamson in the article?

This is quite puzzling. As I am unaware, can anyone tell me if this Cardinal leans to the liberal side (liturgically)?
Let’s just say that there are photos of him out there (you could probably find them here on CAF) of the Cardinal trying to consecrate tortilla chips at a large Mass.

That would be the understatement of the day.

IMHO Cardinal Mahony is far more out of communion with Rome than the SSPX or the Orthodox. It just hasn’t been formally declared.

God Bless

Exactly my first thought when I read Fr Z’s comments.

I can’t decide the word to use regarding such stupid comments by the Cardinal. Heretic ? Apostate ? Blasphemer ? Schismatic ? Anathema ?

Sheesh, someone call an Exorcist.

Anyone have any stats on how well attended the TLM is?
Most Traditional masses worldwide are very well attended. The problem is that many people don’t even know they exist. More than a few Bishops flatly refused to allow them in their Dioceses and in some cases would not even allow the Mass to be celebrated in the same place more than once or more than once a month for that matter. Los Angeles is a prime example of that. Also it is not uncommon for those coming into the Church to be told by RCIA teams that these old masses should be avoided as they are not spiritually beneficial due to the lack of participation on the part of the laity and those that attend them tend to be judgemental and elitist.

Where they are permitted without excessive restrictions they have thrived. I point to two outsatnding examples that I am personally aware of. San Diego and New Orleans. Both of these cities have well established and very well attended Traditional Masses and have had them for years and years. In San Diego, the Mass was celebrated for a number of years in the Chapel of a mauseleum and the crowds overflowed in the surrounding areas of the entombed. Kind of spooky in a way but it drove home the point that all are part of the Church both living and dead. However, the Bishop in San Diego has now assigned the Traditional Mass it’s own parish and the Mass is now offered seven days a week on multiple occasions. In New Orleans, the Mass is celebrated weekly at St Patricks Church and on first Fridays also at St Patricks. These places are living proof that the Traditional Mass is alive and well despite what those who hate and despise it will tell you.

The congregations for these two places are in the mid to high hundreds I would estimate.

I attend a TLM in Michigan and it is well attended, too.

I’m not sure about in LA County, but Orange County is pretty well attended by the EF (TLM). Orange County is directly to the south of LA County in case you don’t know. Orange County has at least two EF Masses. I’m not sure if the one in Huntington Beach is back or not. I believe they are well attended even though they are at 7AM. Both of them are either at that time or right around it. Now, Orange County (the Diocese is the same as the county) is not a large county. If you look at a map you can barely see it. There is also an independent church which isn’t in communion with Rome. It’s in the last place I expected to find a Latin Mass. They have three Masses every Sunday that are overfull. People do stand in the narthex type area and outside at every Sunday Mass. I’m not sure how well attended the daily Masses are.

Last time I checked LA County had one EF Mass a week. They were at one church the 1st Sunday of the month, another the 2nd Sunday of the Month, and so on.

corki, if/when you provide documentation (links) as to such an occurance, then I’ll check those out. Until then, I have to say “No way” to your claim

Your bio says Location, Earth…but I wonder if you have been on Mars for awhile.

I nearly fell out of my Chair when you mentioned your puzzlement about Mahoney and where he is in relation to is “leanings”.

I am not sure is “leaning” is an adequate term. I would seem to me that Cardianl Mahoney has nobody to his left and the rest of the world to his right. The Magisterium would be considered way way way to his right…even though the Magisterium resides in the center.
