Cardinal Mahony Says Abortion Should Not be Funded by Health Care Bills

Washington D.C., Sep 24, 2009 / 05:49 am (CNA).- Responding to a reporter’s question about the place of abortion in health care, Archbishop of Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony has said abortion should not be in the health care reform bill and that President Obama believes similarly.

September 23, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a recent interview with CNSNews.com, Cardinal Roger Mahoney declined to answer a question about whether or not he agreed with Cardinal Justin Rigali that the Obama health care bill should include language explicitly excluding any public funding of abortion. “This is way beyond my field,” the cardinal responded.

“My field is immigration,” said Mahoney, who is the archbishop of Los Angeles. “I really haven’t kept up on that, and I spend all my time on this other. You have to get somebody who spends time on that.”

I have a 10 year old nephew who could have come up with a better answer.

Cardinal Mahoney and his minions in the LA diocese were fairly open in their support of Barack Obama. The goofy “proximate evil” argument was the party line in LA. Progressive priests had parishioners walk out during the “of course we hate abortion, but don’t forget about social justice issues” sermons. I was there, and I was one of them.

Thank God for the priests who were here from out of country. They didn’t buy into the diocese line and spoke about all rights emanating from life, and without it, all the rights meant nothing.

I am trying very hard not to speak ill of the Cardinal. I can say as a Catholic, I am saddened and embarrassed by his tenure.
